IKEA Will Be Entirely Meat-Free This Christmas

5

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to be healthier in 2020, why not start early?

IKEA UK is planning to go completely meat-free this Christmas by rehauling its menu. The decision comes at a time when IKEA is moving towards providing affordable and planet-friendly food.

“As part of our commitment to supporting our customers to live healthier and more sustainable lives, we have decided to launch our first-ever ‘Meat-Free Christmas’ in our restaurants,” IKEA said in a statement. “[…] we really want to encourage our customers to try something new this year.”

Instead of meat, IKEA UK will offer a mouthwatering menu that will please even the pickiest eaters. Some of the dishes that you will find on the menu include vegan Root Vegetable Tart Tatin, vegan mince pies, traditional Brussels sprouts, vegetarian Brie and Cranberry Open Tarts, and more.

The dishes will be part of IKEA’s £5 lunchtime offer and will be available in stores starting November 4.

This move comes as no surprise as big supermarket chains are following the trend to include more vegetarian and vegan meals in their menu. IKEA joins commercial giants such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Waitrose, Aldi, and Marks & Spencer, who have already unveiled their Christmas menus.

Would you try this menu? Let us know in the comments below!

Celebrities Join Forces at Avicii Tribute Concert For Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention

0

You might want to consider a quick stop in Stockholm on December 5. A tribute concert for Avicii is well underway, and the line-up is impressive.

Produced by the Tim Bergling Foundation for mental health awareness and suicide prevention, this star-studded bash will include concerts from some of today’s biggest music celebrities like Kygo, who claims Avicii as one of his biggest inspirations, David Guetta, Adam Lambert, Aloe Blacc, and Rita Ora.

Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, died last year of an apparent suicide while on vacation in Muscat, Oman. Since his death, his parents, Anki and Klas Bergling, have founded the Tim Bergling Foundation, which vows to bring more awareness to mental health and suicide prevention.

According to Avicii’s father, Tim had been struggling with anxiety since his teenage years. Klas Bergling even admitted to having struggled with anxiety throughout his life as well.

Many of the artists performing at the event will be former collaborators and friends of the late Swedish producer. The concert will open with sets from famed DJ’s Guetta, Kygo, Laidback Luke, and Nicky Romero. And for the first time in history, Avicii’s biggest songs will be performed by the original vocalists and a 30 piece live band during a two hour concert. A dream Avicii always had, in a sense, coming true.

Tim had plans for his music to be performed together with a large live band, and now we are realizing his dream and giving fans a chance to experience his music in this unique way,” Klas Bergling said in a statement.

All net profits from the Avicii Tribute Concert for Mental Health Awareness will go to supporting organizations and non-profits that address mental health and suicide prevention.

Tickets have already gone on sale, so if you’re in Stockholm and would love to go to an Avicii “concert” and support mental health foundations, you can buy your ticket online.

David Guetta and Adam Lambert are among the artists set to perform at the Avicii Tribute Concert.

Norwegian Air Announces Partnership with American Low Cost Airline

0

It has been a whirlwind couple of years for airlines.

With both WOW and Thomas Cook declaring bankruptcy and bidding their farewell to the world, it seems like the airspace truly is a survival of the fittest at the moment. And it looks like Norwegian Airlines is one of them.

Earlier this week, Norwegian announced that they had signed a letter of intent together with Jetblue in an effort to offer clients low-fare air travel between the United States and Europe. In a press release, Norwegian Air said:

“The partnership will allow customers to combine low fares in a convenient single booking for connecting flights between the Americas and Europe. Customers will have the possibility to book connecting flights on both airlines’ websites by combining the best of the complementary and expansive networks.”

Norwegian Air, who was recently criticized by many Swedes living in the United States for taking down their route from Los Angeles to Stockholm, looks like it is rebounding with this strategic move.

“We are very excited to partner with JetBlue as this will make international travel even smoother and more available for our customers,” said Norwegian’s Acting CEO and Chief Financial Officer, Geir Karlsen.

The new partnership will connect more than 60 U.S. and nearly 40 Latin American JetBlue-serviced cities to Norwegian’s network via New York-JFK, Boston, and Fort Lauderdale airports. Norwegian currently offers more than 20 nonstop routes to Europe from these three airports, which means an even stronger flight network for both companies.

If you’re already excited to book your next getaway, you’ll need to wait a little bit longer, as flights will only be bookable during the first half of 2020. Customers will be able to book flights through both airlines’ websites. Likewise, customers will also be able to check-in their luggage to their final destination.

Karlsen noted, “[This partnership] will offer seamless connections with two of the most awarded low-cost airlines in the world.”

Indeed, we at Swedes in the States are excited to see where the Norwegian-Jetblue partnership will go.

Meet Linnea Molander – Swedes in the States Love & Dating Columnist

0

Linnea Molander is the love & dating coach that recently joined Swedes in the States as a columnist. Twice a month, our readers will have the pleasure to read about Linnea’s thoughts and opinions as she explores and evaluates the cultural differences between Scandinavian and American love & dating.
Our founder Natalie Söderberg sat down with Linnea Molander at a hotel in New York City to find out more about her, her past experiences, who her average client is and why she chose to work in the United States.

READ: 5 Differences Between Dating in Sweden vs the States

You recently joined Swedes in the States as a columnist. Have you written in the past, and what can we expect from your column at SITS?
Yes, it’s so exciting to be a columnist for SITS. In the past, I’ve written articles about dating and happiness in over 25 Swedish magazines, been a blogger for Match.com and Aftonbladet and written a book on dating psychology to name a few things. I look forward to sharing smart and practical dating advice with a cross-cultural twist with the SITS readers.
Why did you come to New York after several years as a dating coach in Stockholm?
I’ve always wanted to do this work on a bigger scale because dating problems are in no way specific to Sweden. I think it’s a global problem that we are not taught to understand our emotions, which is the foundation for most people’s dating and relationship problems. Also, I’m pretty much the only dating coach in Sweden so I wanted to meet colleagues in the U.S, be inspired by their work and explore new opportunities.

What is the biggest difference between being a dating coach in Sweden compared to the U.S?

It’s much more common here. There are so many more dating coaches with all kinds of niches and specialties. I also think there is an openness and awareness around the whole concept of getting professional help with your love life.

How would you describe your average coaching client?
My average client is a smart, beautiful and high achieving woman between 30-40, who is successful at most things in life (friends, work, travel etc) but has a tendency of overthinking a lot and struggles disproportionally with her love life without understanding why.
The next column from Linnea will be out this Friday!

The Swedish Mobile Passport Stations Down: Here’s What You Need To Know

0

It was earlier this week that an email was sent out to Swedes living in the States, canceling all passport appointments made at the Swedish Mobile Passport Stations, that normally travels between the consulates in San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, and Fort Lauderdale/Miami among other cities.

The passport stations, provided by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a way to facilitate the process of renewing their passports easier for Swedish citizens living in the United States, have been affected by major technical issues. Although troubleshooting was done, the technical issues remain hence taking the machines out of service for an unforeseeable amount of time.

This puts a lot of Swedes living in States in a bit of a pickle regarding the renewals of their passports. We decided to get in touch with the Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C. to get some answers and to find out what the solutions are for the Swedish passport holders in the U.S.

The following answers are provided to us from the Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C.

What can citizens do if their passport is about to or already has expired?

In the U.S. you can apply for/renew a passport at the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC, or at the Consulate General in New York. We recommend that citizens apply for/renew a passport well in advance before it expires, or they need to travel.

Swedish citizens can of course also apply while visiting Sweden. If the passport has already expired, a citizen can still apply/renew for a passport as long as a valid Swedish or American photo ID with clearly visible signs can be presented.

When do you estimate the passport stations to be up and running again?

The future of the mobile passport service is a decision for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm, Sweden.

Can an emergency passport still be applied for at the General Consulates?

In the U.S., you may apply for a temporary/emergency passport at the following locations:
-The Embassy in Washington, D.C.
-The Consulate General in New York
-The Honorary Consulates in: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco.

So what can you do?

With the solutions given to us by the embassy, you have two options when it comes to renewing your passport.

  1. You apply for an emergency passport at your nearest consulate. Use said emergency passport to travel back home to Sweden, and apply for a new passport there. If you have an upcoming trip to Sweden, which you were hoping to renew your passport for, this would be the best solution for you.
  2. If you are staying put in the United States for a while, you can travel to either Washington D.C. or New York City and have your passport renewed at the Embassy/ Honorary Consulate. Due to the circumstances, the Embassy in Washington D.C. will have additional appointments available.

Sweden to Host First Mixed Gender Golf Tournament In 2020

0

Who’s better: Girls vs Boys? The age-old question will be put to the test next year when more than 150 golfers will battle it out against each other.

The first-ever Scandinavian Mixed tournament, hosted by professional Swedish golfers Henrik Stenson and Annika Sörenstam, will be held in June 2020 in Stockholm. The competition will see 78 men and 78 women battling against each other to win the title of the best golfer – along with a 1.5 million-euro ($1.66 million) prize fund.

“Bringing women and men together in a combined tournament is exciting for fans in Sweden and for the global game as we continue to showcase golf is a game for everyone,” said 10-time major champion Sörenstam.

As well as counting towards world rankings, Race to Dubai points and Ryder Cup points will be available to the men, and Order of Merit points will be on offer for the women.

Women will be competing against men at the GolfSixes team event, while women’s tournaments run concurrently with men’s events at the Trophee Hassan in Morocco and the Vic Open in Australia. However, this will be the first time they have competed against each other in a full-field format. The tournament will be co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Ladies European Tour (LET).

“To have men and women competing alongside one another showcases what is great about our game,” Sörenstam stated,

“I believe this is certainly one (format) that can be part of the way golf is played in the future. Making our game accessible to everyone is something I am extremely passionate about.”

May the best (wo)man win!

Nordic Countries Halt All Weapon Exports To Turkey With Immediate Effect

0

The recent events happening with the Turkish military in Syria have left some European countries at a trade standstill.

After U.S. troops left the war scene in Syria this week, countries in Europe are standing up and quickly canceling all types of weaponry exports to Turkey. In fact, three Nordic countries — Finland, Sweden, and Norway — have all publicly denounced the actions by Turkey and will cease all trading deals with the Turkish military.

“All existing permits will be revoked,” stated Carl Johan Wieslander, Acting Director-General of ISP, the National Inspectorate of Strategic Products, to Swedish news agency TT.

A total of two export permits will be revoked by Sweden. According to ISP, none of these permits include weaponry as Sweden’s exports to the Turkish military have been exclusively labeled “other military equipment,” which usually includes electronic equipment, PPE, software and technical assistance.

According to ISP, the two permits from Sweden concern gunpowder and explosives.

Finland and Norway have also chosen to abruptly stop all types of exports to Turkey.

Finland, who have recently approved the export of drones to Turkey, pulled the brakes on exportation, with Finland’s Minister of Defence saying: ”The situation is grave. For my area of responsibility, I can say this: Finland does not export armaments to countries that wage war or violates human rights.”

According to representatives in Sweden, Finland, and Norway, the decision to cut off supplies for Turkey was made after the EU publicly denounced Turkey’s actions.

It is a collective assessment made of the current circumstances, with statements made by both the government and the parliament, that we will be standing firmly behind a weapon embargo within the EU’s framework,” says Carl Johan Wieslander.

It seems that a fellow Nordic neighbor will be following suit, as Denmark echos similar plans:

We must absolutely follow Norway and Sweden’s examples and ensure we immediately stop all weapon sales to Turkey from Denmark and recommend to the EU next week a full European freeze on weapons exports,” Red-Green Alliance foreign spokesperson Eva Flyvholm said.

Denmark should, like other Nordic countries, stop all export of military equipment. We cannot justify selling weapons to a country which uses them against an ally in the fight against international terrorism,” added political party leader Pia Olsen Dyhr.

We can’t stop Erdogan’s aggressive behavior alone. So we need other European countries to join us,” she added.

Sweden Encourage Citizens to Save Lives With This Simple Text Message

0
Blood bag and hand of donor with heart. Blood donation day concept. Human donates blood. Vector illustration in flat style.

Recently, the lack of blood donors is gaining new proportions worldwide. This is why the Swedish Blood Service has introduced an initiative that motivates people to become blood donors, and involve their friends as well.

The essence of the initiative is that when donating blood, the donor receives a text message of gratitude. Later, when his blood is used to save somebody’s life, a message arrives that the blood was used and a thank-you note — roughly translated, the text says  “Thank you, the blood you gave is now benefiting a patient. Regards, Blood Centre.”

We are constantly trying to develop ways to express [donors’] importance,” Karolina Blom Wiberg, a communications manager at the Stockholm blood service told The Independent.

The Swedish Blood Service reports that this initiative encourages people to donate blood more often, as well as attract new donors to donate blood.

Likewise, the policy has opened up a bigger discussion on social networks, which led to increased awareness about the lack of donors, as well as a new wave of donors who want to donate blood.

We get a lot of visibility in social media and traditional media thanks to the SMS. But above all we believe it makes our donors come back to us, and donate again,” noted Ms. Wiberg.

This program was first launched in Stockholm three years ago but is currently collecting all the more positive reactions across the country.

Social media is an extremely important channel for us to reach our donors. Sweden needs more young donors to have a stable blood supply in the future,” says Lottie Furugård, a communications manager at Stockholm’s blood center.

Sweden’s creativity in getting people to donate blood goes beyond social media. For example, a person can agree to receive notifications from the blood center until they have gone in person and donated blood.

One of the notifications is a lighthearted threat – “We will not give up until you bleed.

Will this initiative increase blood donations? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, every text message counts – after all, each donation can save up to three lives.

Donald Trump Officially Proclaims October 9 as Leif Erikson Day

1

You have most definitely heard of Christopher Columbus, but have you heard of Leif Erikson?

These two famous explorers have fought for centuries over the title as the first European to set foot in North America, but there’s a twist: some records believe that Viking explorer Leif Erikson is credited with reaching the continent around the year 1000, which is nearly 500 years before Columbus did.

Leif Erikson’s passion for adventure came from his father, Erik the Red, who was the founder of the first Norse settlement in Greenland. Leif followed his path and established a Norse settlement in Vinland, which is now the northern tip of Newfoundland in modern-day Canada.

Thanks to this spirit, Leif Erikson’s history was officially recognized by the President of the United States, Donald Trump

In a press statement on October 8, Trump praised the Viking explorer by starting, “we honor the spirit of exploration, courage, and faith that led this legendary Viking and his crew to sail across the Atlantic in search of new lands and opportunities more than a thousand years ago.”

President Trump’s continued his praise with a comparison to another famous voyage – that of Apollo 11: “Leif Erikson’s undaunted life of exploration began in Iceland — the same location where the Apollo 11 crew trained for its historic journey to the surface of the Moon.”

The statement broadened to include Americans who trace their ancestry back to the Nordic countries and those who have contributed to the society of the United States.

“Americans share strong bonds with the homelands of the Vikings.  Millions of Americans proudly trace their ancestry to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. […] Nordic Americans contribute each day to the rich tapestry of our country by their self-reliance, drive, spirit of adventure, and cultural traditions.  On this day, we pay tribute to the remarkable achievements of Leif Erikson, and we celebrate the daring dreams, big vision, and passion for discovery of all people of Scandinavian heritage.

President Trump ended his statement by proclaiming October 9 as Leif Erikson day — “I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America […] do hereby proclaim October 9, 2019, as Leif Erikson Day.

I call upon all Americans to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Nordic Americans to our Nation with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.”

Interestingly enough, October 9 is not associated with any particular event in Leif Erikson’s life. The date was chosen because the ship Restauration, which came from Stavanger, Norway, arrived in New York Harbor on October 9, 1825 and subsequently began a wave of immigration from Norway to America.

Will you be celebrating Leif Erikson day? Let us know in the comments!
