#Swedishmade: Nordstrom

0

#Swedishmade is our new weekly article series in which we feature famous brands, apps, artists, DJs and companies that are made in Sweden. We’re skipping H&M, IKEA, and ABBA because we know that you already know they’re Swedish treasures – instead we are highlighting equally as awesome people, brands and companies, that we are guessing you didn’t know were Swedish. Are we right or are we wrong? Don’t forget to vote in the poll below the article!

For our third #Swedishmade article, we’re introducing a brand you’re most definitely familiar with, but did you know that the department store Nordstrom was founded by a Swede?

The department store Nordstrom currently has 349 stores in over 40 states in the U.S, Puerto Rico and Canada and pulled in a revenue of almost 15 billion dollars last year. But this wasn’t always the case. Let’s go back 130 years in time.

The village of Alvik, Northern Sweden, the year is 1887 and John W. Nordstrom (born Johan Wilhelm Nordström) is 16 years old and have just left his hometown inhabiting less than 300 people to move to the land of opportunity and prosperity: the United States. Nordstrom was not the only Swede leaving Sweden at this time, it’s estimated that around 1.3 million Swedes emigrated to the U.S between late 19th century and early 20th century.

When John W. Nordstrom left Sweden he didn’t speak a single word of English and with only $100 on hand, an inheritance from his father, which decreased to a single $5 bill after buying boat and train passage, food and a new suit for the long journey.

For around 10 years he moved across the country, working in mines and logging camps which was a harsh life.

In his autobiography The Immigrant in 1887, John Nordstrom describes life as harsh and brutal having to share a bunk with a fellow worker who smelled heavily of the sweating horses he tended. He also wrote that he “awoke some mornings with his hair frozen to his head or his body covered with bites from lice”. When working at a Fremont sawmill for $1.5 dollar/day, Nordstrom saw his partner being pulled down a steep embankment while breaking his back. He died instantly, which made Nordstrom realize that he had to leave to find a more bearable lifestyle. Not long after that, he saw a newspaper headline about working in gold mines in Alaska.

After two years of hard work, he struck gold and earned $13,000 for which he moved to Seattle and started a shoe store together with his friend Carl F. Wallin. The store was originally called Wallin & Nordstrom but later turned into what we know it as today: Nordstrom Inc.

Fast forward to 27 years later. John W. Nordstrom retires and sells his shares to two of his sons, Everett and Elmer. One year later, his companion, Wallin, retires and sells his shares to the Nordstrom brothers as well. Another one of Nordstrom’s sons join the company in 1933 and together the three brothers runs the business successfully for almost 40 years. Ironically John W. Nordstrom never had any real interested in the fashion or the shoe industry, but he still showed up daily at the store in Seattle until he turned 80 – just to chat with the customers.

In 1971, Nordstrom Best was made public on NASDAQ. It was two years later that the company became simple Nordstrom without any frills to it. It was later moved to the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol JWN after John W. Nordstrom.

Nordstrom continued to expand and grow rapidly during the 1970s. When expanding to the southern California market, the firm had over $300 million in sales. This put them in the in the same category as Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor, meaning that Nordstrom was now the third largest specialty retailer in the U.S. Nordstrom projected that by 1985 they would double the earnings and total square footage. Funnily enough, that projection was not optimistic enough. 1980 recorded a sales record of $407 million and just three years later sales reached $787 million. The success would not end there, by each following year, Nordstrom continued to open new stores and double their earnings.

What was the reason behind the massive success?

The success was due to several factors but from the start, John W. Nordstrom believed that success would come if they could offer customers the best service, selection, quality, and value. Another factor was the selection: Nordstrom maintained bigger inventories and a wider selection than any other department store.

Today Nordstrom is still known for its ridiculously good customer service and loose return policy – just like John W. Nordstrom wanted it. Through word of mouth tales such as salespeople paying shoppers parking tickets, rush deliveries to offices, unquestioningly accept returns, lend cash to strapped customers and to send tailors to customers’ homes were told.

Even in 2017 a lot of Nordstrom’s frequent customers have such good relationships with the salespeople that they get pictures sent to their phones of new stuff coming in that they might be interested in.

Nordstrom is till this day a family company and is currently run by Blake, Pete, and Erik Nordstrom. Nordstrom’s sister Maria’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren still live in Alvik, outside of Luleå in the northern parts of Sweden where John W. Nordstrom was once born. They have done well for themselves as well, owning a bus and truck company called Alviks Trafik as well as the travel agent company NEX which is based in Luleå.

Blake, Pete, and Erik Nordstrom. The great-grandsons of the Swedish immigrant John W. Nordstrom, founder of Nordstroms.

Did you know:

1. Nordstrom sold $2.3 billion worth of goods to customers in 1988, when they only had 21,000 employees and 58 stores. That meant a profit of $123 million.

2. Their return policy is almost to the point of insanity. According to the return policy, there is no last date to return something you bought, meaning you can return it years later. Even if it’s used or stained. You don’t even need a receipt to return an item – all though it makes the process shorter. You’re even allowed to return makeup that you’ve used!

3. While many stores closed their doors during the great depression in 1930, the original Nordstrom shoe stores made $250,000 in sales.

4. A woman in North Carolina once lost a diamond of her wedding ring when trying on clothes at a Nordstrom store. She started to crawl around the floor looking for it and when a store security worker saw this he helped her search, even going so far as to ask two building-services workers to help. They ended up having to open bags of the store’s vacuum cleaners which is where they eventually found the diamond.

5. Salespeople are trained to never point where things are but always follow the customer there as well as never answer the phone later than the 2nd ring.

6. Nordstrom is a Hall of Fame member of Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For-list.

7. For those interested in John W. Nordstrom history, founder of Nordstrom’s, he wrote an autobiography in 1887 called The Immigrant.

8. At the very beginning of Nordstrom’s history, a man walked a Nordstrom department store in Alaska with two snow tires. He walked up to the counter, put the tires down and asked for his money back. The clerk, who’d been working there for two weeks, saw the price on the side of the tires, reached into the cash register and handed the man $145. It didn’t matter that Nordstrom doesn’t sell tires, the customer got what he wanted which is what’s been Nordstrom’s policy from the start in 1901.

Sweet Kardamom – The Swedish mother-daughter baking duo

0

We at Swedes in the States love everything Swedish. Therefore, we were really excited when we heard about Sweet Kardamom and decided that we wanted to know more.

Sweet Kardamom is a Swedish-American, mother and daughter baking team. Located in Oregon, they specialize in traditional, authentic Swedish bread and pastries. Their philosophy is simple: create quality products using quality ingredients. Everything is made from scratch, using real butter, real eggs, and fresh dairy products.
Meet Margareta and Jennifer, the creators of Sweet Kardamom.

Margareta was born and raised in the small and picturesque town of Kungshamn, on the west coast of Sweden. She moved to Munich, Germany with her husband in 1989, where they lived for 6 1/2 years, and where Jennifer was born in 1996. Jennifer is one out of five siblings, the three oldest ones were born in Germany, and two youngest in the United States. Margareta and her family moved to the U.S. when Jennifer was only a few months old.

Why did they decide to start Sweet Cardamom? The answer is quite simple, they missed Swedish pastries and bread. Like so many other Swedes that have moved abroad will agree with, the pastries and desserts from Sweden are one of the things that are missed the most.  Because of her longing for Swedish pastries, Margareta told her daughter that they should start baking and selling their own cinnamon buns instead.

The duo started out by selling their baked goods at local farmers markets in their neighborhood this summer. The response was, from the very start, outstanding. Everyone, both Americans and other international expats loved the Swedish cinnamon buns from Sweet Kardamom. When attending two local Midsummer Fest’s in Oregon, they sold out within just a few hours. The crowd simply couldn’t get enough.

Today, Sweet Kardamom rents a spot in a commercial kitchen once a week and are baking on private orders. Margareta lets us know that customers usually order through their Facebook page or calls them ahead of time. As of right now the baking queens are preparing and planning ahead for the Scandinavian Christmas Fair that takes place the first weekend in December.

The cardamom buns are the number one of their bestsellers. However, they recently added Swedish Limpa to the menu, and that has been very popular too. Not only does the Swedish customers love it, but Americans seem to appreciate it too.

What’s most rewarding for Margareta is to be able to work and do something together with her daughter. As a matter of fact, one of her other daughters is also included in the project – she’s the one who keeps their social media channels up to date.

Margareta also says: “Meeting so many new people and hearing their stories. There are a lot of Americans with Swedish roots, who will tell us their stories about how we remind them of their grandma’s baking for example, and how happy they are to have found us. Makes it extra fun and rewarding”.

We are thrilled to let you know that Sweet Kardamom has given us the permission to post one of their recipes. So stay tuned for that! In the meantime, you can follow Sweet Kardamom either on Facebook here, or on Instagram here.

New Stricter Rules for Passengers Flying to the United States

0

People who are not American citizens and who are planning to visit the US in the near future should be prepared to arrive at the airport earlier than usual. At the end of June John Kelly, the former Secretary of Homeland Security announced that new safety regulations regarding international flights to the US would be put in place later this year.

The Swedish TT News Agency (TT) have reported that the new rules will entail passengers getting interviewed at the check-in-desk about what they’re bringing into the US. This could be questions such as what the passengers put into his or her luggage and if they packed their bag by themselves.

The airline companies SAS and Norwegian are planning on adapting to the new rules and representatives said to Aftonbladet that passengers traveling to the US will get text or email updates if needed. Lufthansa said to TT that passengers traveling with them might be subjected to a shot interview either at check-in or at the gate. Fredrik Henriksson, Press Relations Manager at SAS said in an interview with Aftonbladet that “we encourage passengers traveling to the US to come to the airport extra early”.

Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific said that they’re removing the self-check in-option for flights to the US and that their passengers should arrive at the airport 3 hours before their flights for short safety interview, according to TT.

Halloween: New Orleans Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau

0
Marie Laveau by artist Dimitri Fouquet

Halloween is right around the corner and we are here to bring you all the spooky feels…

Some of you may, or may not know, about New Orleans spooky voodoo history. And there is no mentioning voodoo and spiritualism in New Orleans without mentioning one of the city’s most infamous women – Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen.

In 1791, a group of slaves started a massive revolt back on the island of St. Dominique, today’s Haiti, at the time colonized by the French, just like New Orleans was.

Although colonized, New Orleans society, compared to St. Dominique, permitted the existence of gens de couleur libres, free people of color and slaves were given more freedom to join together. African religious practitioners found a safe, yet clandestine, new home in the city’s early history, and began to emigrate to New Orleans and form an environment for their spiritualism and traditions.

Published by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, 1750

The assortment of multiple beliefs and practices brought over from different parts of the Western African civilization led to what we today know as New Orleans Voodoo. As a matter of fact, an intense and well-attended voodoo ceremony was precisely what had inspired the slave revolt. However, the voodoo culture wouldn’t have become as popular as it is today if it wasn’t for the unifying force of the infamous Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen.

Marie Laveau is believed to have been born in the French Quarter of New Orleans on September 10, 1801. She was the illegitimate daughter of wealthy Creole plantation owner and politician, Charles Laveau and his mistress Marguerite, a free woman of color.

Marie grew up on her father’s plantation where she was educated and studied to be a hairdresser. She was a devout Catholic, which was and still is the main religion of New Orleans and large parts of Louisiana, and she attended mass every day of her life.

On August 4, 1819, Marie Laveau married carpenter Jacques Paris from Haiti. Their marriage certificate is preserved in St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest active cathedral in the United States, you can read more about that in my previous article here. This record also contains the names of Marie’s parents: Charles Laveau and Marguerite Darcantrel. She was described as tall, beautiful, with curly black hair and golden skin.

Jacques Paris died only two years after they had married, and left Marie as a widow with two kids. She started practicing as a hairdresser catering to the wealthy white and Creole women of New Orleans. Many of these women trusted Marie wholeheartedly and shared their most private secrets to her. Later Laveau also became a nurse, which at this time meant she would perform minor surgeries. She would also council prisoners on death row as well as welcome people in need of healthcare into her home.

ntered into a common-law marriage with Louis Christophe Dumesnil de Glapion and lived with him upon his death in 1855. Together they had a whopping total of 15 children! Even though Glapion and Laveau lived together for a long time they never legally married, and she was always referred to as Widow Paris. Ultimately she ended her hairdressing career to devote all her energies to raising her children. But she never lost her clientele as she set about becoming the legendary Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.

Marie Laveau stayed a devoted Catholic but became more and more interested in her mothers’ African traditional beliefs. While voodoo was already commonly practiced in New Orleans, the society was secretive as the state of Louisiana banned it from times to times. Marie started to learn the crafts of voodoo from a voodoo doctor Dr. John or John Bayou and by 1830 she was one of several voodoo queens.

Once the news of Laveau’s powers spread, she overthrew the other voodoo queens of New Orleans. She acted as an oracle, a person who predicts the future, conducted private rituals behind her cottage on St. Ann Street in the French Quarter. And you can visit her cottage on St. Ann today, an immensely popular tourist attraction in New Orleans. Oral traditions suggest that she used her magic and mixed Roman Catholic beliefs, including saints, with African spirits and religious concepts.

New Orleans voodoo queen continued to practice up until her death on June 15th, 1888. Just to give you a hint of how famous she was, her obituary was printed in both the New Orleans Times-Picayune and in the New York Times. She was buried in Saint Louis Cemetery #1, which is believed to be the most haunted cemetery in the U.S., in the Laveau-Glapion family crypt. The burials are in above ground vaults, the above-ground tombs are required here because the groundwater levels make burial impractical in New Orleans. The tradition says that if you leave coins, mardi gras beads or candles by her grave the Voodoo Queen will grace your favor.

Parenting Groups in L.A.

0

While becoming a parent is one of the most beautiful experiences a person can have, it can also be very difficult in the beginning. Hormones are out of control, lack of sleep is almost inevitable, and the sudden responsibility for a helpless human being can feel overwhelming.

According to the American Psychological Association up to 1 out of 7 women who give birth experience symptoms of postpartum depression. If you think you might be struggling with this, it is strongly recommended to reach out to a professional for help right away. Even if you are lucky enough not to be afflicted in this way, adjusting to parenthood is often a challenge. Some of us have built-in support networks in place already; family and friends who have children themselves, but if not, it is easy to feel isolated.

The good news is, you’re not alone. There is a huge network of people out there who have made it their mission to help and support new parents in numerous parenting classes and groups.

The Pump Station is a great place to start as a new parent; it offers nursing and sleep classes, as well as a wide variety of workshops and playgroups.  The groups are well organized and led by friendly and competent counselors who create a safe and warm atmosphere for new parents to ask questions and share the joys and challenges of parenthood.

Svenska Skolan (The Swedish school in Los Angles) is the perfect place for families with ties to Sweden who want to raise their children bilingually. The school offers weekly classes for children ages one and a half all the way up to the teenage years. The younger classes function more like parenting groups, whereas the older groups focus on reading, writing, and learning about Sweden and Swedish culture. As a parent you can enjoy Swedish homemade pastries and coffee in the break-room while your children attend class – a great way to take an afternoon break and connect with other Swedes in the area!

There’s always time for Happy Hour!

0

It’s five o’clock and other than throwing in a load of laundry and shuttling our daughter from dance class to a sleepover, I’ve been in front of my computer all day. My neck is stiff and my eyes are blurry. I can hear my husband tapping away at his computer upstairs.
“Can you take a break?” I yell up to him.
“Sure. How about Happy Hour?”

Five minutes later I’ve changed into a dress and applied some lipstick while texting to see if our neighbor wants to join us.
Fifteen minutes later we are sitting at a high top at a nearby restaurant with glasses of wine and beer in front of us, waiting for our appetizers to arrive.

As a parent, it can be difficult to find time to get out and socialize. That’s what’s so great about going to Happy Hour. You’re not committing to spending a lot of time or money at a restaurant or paying for a babysitter to come for many hours. It’s also a great way to catch up with equally busy friends.

Here are three of my favorite Happy Hour spots in Santa Monica.

Happy Hours:
Monday – Saturday from 4-7pm
Friday & Saturday from 9-11pm
Sunday from 4-7pm
Favorite appetizer: Fresh Oysters – $1.75/each
The heated outside patio is perfect both for romantic dates and casual get-togethers with friends. This is one of the few places in the area that has a late-night happy hour as well.

Margo’s

Happy Hour: (They call it “Social Hour”) 3-7pm daily
Favorite appetizer: Mussels in coconut curry sauce – $7
They have a cramped but cozy happy hour section; like hanging out in someone’s living room that just happens to have a bar in it. The crowd is a bit older; we often run into other parents from our daughter’s school.
