Fredrik Eklund Welcomes Twins to the World

0

There is no denying that one of our proudest Swedish exports to the United States is Fredrik Eklund. As one of the most successful, and probably most charismatic, real estate agents in the United States, you can bet that the majority of all Swedes are cheering him on while we follow the story of his life with a keen interest.

That’s why it was a joy to many people, including ours, to see that Fredrik and husband Derek had welcomed their beloved, and much longed for twins, Milla and Fredrick, to the world.

Happiest moment of my life. Welcome Fredrick and Milla to the world. ?‍?‍?‍?

A post shared by Fredrik Eklund (@fredrikeklundny) on

The photo Fredrik posted to announce the birth of his twins shows him and husband Derek holding their newest family members.

Fredrik and Derek had previously been very open about their struggle to become parents. First opening up to the world about the miscarriage that they, and their surrogate, had suffered through on the show “Million Dollar Listing – New York”. It was an empowering journey watching Fredrik and Derek struggle through the hardships of miscarriage to announcing the pregnancy of now born Milla and Fredrick.

We’re ready for you now… ?

#Swedishmade: Zound Industries

0

#Swedishmade is our new weekly article series in which we feature famous brands, apps, artists, DJs and companies that are made in Sweden. We’re skipping H&M, IKEA, and ABBA because we know that you already know they’re Swedish treasures – instead we are highlighting equally as awesome people, brands, and companies, that we are guessing you didn’t know were Swedish. Are we right or are we wrong? Don’t forget to vote in the poll below the article!

For this weeks #Swedishmade, we’re introducing Zound Industries. Keep reading because we bet you didn’t know about their Swedish origins.

Marshall speakers and phone

Have you ever bought a pair of Urbanears or Marshall headphones? If you have, you’re not the only one. Zound Industries, the company behind the two famous brands of headphones, passed 1 billion SEK in sales in 2016.

Zound Industries was founded in Jönköping, Sweden in 2008 by Konrad Bergström, Erik Petersen, Andreas ”Byske” Enquist, Marcus von Euler, Niklas Berg, Oscar Axhede, Vincent Skoglund and Kenneth Schönborg. Their concept was built on the idea that the headphones didn’t need to have the best technology, but the design had to be neat.

The big dinosaurs of headphones or electronics still look at headphones solely as a functional product. If you search on the web, they are seen as a technical product. What we try to do is be the best in other aspects. Be the best in design, be the best in functionality, but also be the best when it comes to sound,” Konrad Bergström told Highsnobiety in an interview back in 2013.

The founders of Zound Industries.

None of the eight founders have roots in music or tech, but instead they all have experience from working with “lifestyle” and three of them are designers. “Our company president Konrad Bergström launched the concept of a “headphone house”, inspired by products such as watches and sunglasses, Oscar Axhede told Atta45.

Oscar Axhede continued: “He saw that the niche existed and what as missing. When we first started, almost all headphones were black, grey or silver with a heavy tech focus. Our thought was to add the design perspective, that there’s actually a market for headphones that you want to wear as a part of your personality.

It’s safe to say that the concept has worked so far. Between 2008 and 2013 Zound Industries sold over 5 million headphones, ranging from Urbanears colorful model Plattan to the brand Molami, which features headphones with a feminine touch of leather and gold.

Starting off in Jönköping, Zound Industries released their first pair of headphones in 22 markets a year after registering the company. Within three years, they increased their revenue from 0 to $40 million in only three years.

We started off with cheaper products which we could mass produce. Going from zero to $40 million in 28 months sounds incredible, but the Swedish market is too small if you have a bigger vision. It’s not economically sustainable without a global market. The banks demand that you make a profit, but if you do, the Swedish state wants you to pay taxes. That makes it hard to grow within the necessary phase needed to reach the next level.” Konrad Bergström said to Privata Affarer, in regards to their massive growth.

“Briefing the Urbanears we said that if Donald Duck had a pair of headphones, they would look like ours. Colorful and minimalistic Scandinavian. We put in a lot of work on packaging and presentation: We wanted it to be faceless, no celebrities, the design should speak for itself.” – Konrad Bergström in an interview with King. Photo: Brandzone.

In 2015 when the French company Time for Growth invested $12 million into Zound Industries, the company decided that they were going to develop their own smartphone. The smartphone was to be named London and would include functions such as greater sound, two headphone outlets as well built in speakers equal to buying a wireless speaker pod. The phone would be targeted towards music enthusiasts and be “the world’s loudest phone” according to VP Konrad Bergström.

Unfortunately, Zound Industries wasn’t as successful in the phone market as they would have liked to be. The revenue goal for the London phone was set at $12.5 million, but the revenue barely reached $6 million, resulting in $750 000 in operational losses for 2015. “A negative result that we’re not happy with, but at the same time this is a long-term investment. The project has strengthened the brand Zound and we got a fantastic PR-story out of it, where Zound has transitioned from a headphone company to a tech company“, said Konrad Bergström to Di Digital. The long-term investment never picked up and in May 2017, Zound Industries decided to phase out the phone completely.

In 2017, Zound Industries added an office in Paris to their already existing hub of offices in New York, Stockholm and Shenzhen. Telia Sonera own 6 percent of the company and famous songwriter Max Martin own half a percentage, which sounds like scrapes, but is actually worth $625 000. The next step for Zound Industries is to take the company public, which they plan to do at the end of 2017. Zound Industries is set to be valued at 3 billion SEK, which is three times the yearly revenue.

“The company is very strong, seen to the financials. Every time we reach milestones like this, we aim higher. Taking the company public is one thing we’re looking at in terms of growing”, said VP Konrad Bergström to Di Digital.

In their latest financial press release, Tommy Jacobson, Chairman of the Zound Industries Board stated that: “Zound continues on its fantastic journey, with increased profitability year on year. All of us on the ownership side of the business would like to thank the entire Zound team for their fantastic performance. We have great faith in the future and the current work underway in implementing the decided strategic plan.

Did you know:

  1. When doing business in China, Zound Industries DropBox got shut down for a week.
  2. Zound Industries increased their revenue from 2010 to 2013 with 10.932 percent.
  3. Zound Industries moved into the office of the Swedish State Railway in 2015 and is 1.525 square meters big in its entirety. They even got the general director’s penthouse.
  4. Their four brands were represented in over 20 000 stores in 100 countries in 2015.

Uber Orders 24.000 Self-Driving Cars From Volvo

0

Uber has made a deal with Volvo to purchase 24,000 of the company’s XC90 SUVs between 2019 and 2021 to form a fleet of self-driving cars, according to Bloomberg News. The cars will be specifically tweaked for Uber, making it easier for the transportation technology company to mount their tech on the roof of the cars, reports Financial Times.

“Our goal is to be the most sought out car supplier for self-driving carpooling services around the world. Today’s deal with Uber is a clear example of a new strategic path for us”, says Volvo Cars VP Håkan Samuelsson to Breakit.se.

An estimated 24.000 cars will be viewed for purchase. If Uber ends up buying all of them it will be the biggest order Volvo’s ever received and the biggest deal ever made in regards to self-driving cars. The agreement, which runs between 2019-2021 is worth 10 billion SEK according to Wall Street Journal.

Jeff Miller, head of auto alliances at Uber, said in a statement that the agreement put Uber on a path toward “mass produced self-driving vehicles at scale” and that they’re “incredibly glad to be able to be able to expand our partnership with Volvo”. This deal between Volvo and Uber is an extension of a strategic collaboration that was formed in 2016.

The XC90 is not ready to be used by real people yet and is still in the testing phase. The uber customised version of the XC90 model will have a back-up-system for steering and back-pedaling.

“In the world of self-driving there is no human behind the wheel, which means you need a back-up-system which can take control in case of a mechanical or technical error”, Jeff Miller said to Financial Times.

Ankan och Marre – A New Gem in Children’s Music

0

It suddenly gets a lot brighter and warmer when musical artists Annica McCrudden and Maria Isaacs enter the coffee shop in a flurry of infectious laughter and warm hugs. We’re meeting at Urth Caffé in Beverly Hills to talk about their joint passion-project Barnmusik med Ankan och Marre – a series of Swedish children’s albums that no Swedish parent living abroad will want to miss. The songs are sweet, fun, and educational with undertones of traditional Swedish folk music; the skits between the tracks are hilarious, charming, and great conversation starters for parents, teachers and kids.

The two of you seem like lifelong friends, did you know each other in Sweden?
A: No, we’re both from suburbs outside of Stockholm, but we met in the U.S.
M: Annica had already been here for many years when I moved to LA in 2012. She became my first and best friend here. She still is!

What inspired you to create children’s albums together?
M: The idea grew out of working together at Svenska Fritidsklubben, a group we created for Swedish children living on our side of LA. I live in Echo park and Annica in Beachwood Canyon, which are both a bit far from The Swedish School in Los Angeles. I did most of the singing and Annica created fun characters to entertain the kids. We’ve incorporated a great deal of that in our albums.

It seems to me like you’ve tapped into the magical world of children – how do you do that as an adult?
M: It makes me so happy to hear you say that!
A: I think the answer to that is never to leave the magical world of children in the first place.

Why did you choose to create albums in Swedish?
M: We made them mostly for Swedish parents living abroad, like ourselves. We want to help them keep their language alive and share their culture with their children.                A: I feel like language is so important. When I first became a mom, I realized that it felt wrong to cuddle and use terms of endearment with my babies in English. I had to speak Swedish for it to truly come from my heart.

Who does what on the albums?
A: Maria is an experienced singer and musician, so she does most of the music, especially in the beginning.
M: Annica, who is a very talented actress, started out writing most of the skits. We complement each other very well that way, and have helped each other grow as artists. I was terrified of acting out the skits when we first recorded them.
A: And I was very nervous about singing, but now we both love doing all of it together.
M: I brought a lot of material from earlier collaborations, as well as from my time as a Waldorf-teacher in Sweden. We’ve included the songs that were my students’ favorites back then.
A: We have also written a total of six songs together, three on each album.

What are the pros and cons of working with a close friend?
M: The pros are how well we work together, and how fun we have while doing it. The cons might be that sometimes we are having so much fun that we just want to hang out instead of work.
A: We have a pretty good balance though, I think. When something needs to get done, we get it done. We’re both very enthusiastic about this project, which makes us efficient.

Can we see you perform anywhere?
M: We are considering performing at the Swedish schools, we’ll keep you posted.

What is the age range of your target listener?
A: I’d say from age two and up.
M: My son, who is seventeen, saw the video we are working on and said he thought it was really fun!
A: We don’t believe in an upper age limit!

I really enjoyed the melodies, even as an adult.
M: We wanted the focus to be on the melodies, and the lyrics and the productions to be pretty neutral and “time-less”. Also, my husband, who is a music producer, is making sure everything we produce can be listened to in the car without driving the adults nuts. Children’s songs can start grating on your nerves sometimes, and we want to make sure that never happens with our music.

I think a lot of parents will be very grateful for that! What’s up next for you?
A: Our focus right now is creating visual material. We are making videos for the songs that we have written together.
M: Originally, I was against the idea of videos. I was influenced by the Waldorf philosophy, where we try to be aware of and limit screen time for the younger children. I just wanted to make books to go with the music.

A: Books are great, but it felt like we’d be fighting our own time; there is so much visual material out there that children love watching.
M: We ended up making a video for one of the songs, “Min Lilla Igelkott”, and when I saw how brilliant Annica was, how genius the whole thing was really, I completely changed my mind about videos. Now I’m very excited about working on the visual material, it is our number one priority.

A: We just filmed a video yesterday, it was so much fun! We are also working on the next album in the series: Ankan och Marre. Vol.3.

We can’t wait for that to come out! In the meantime, you can check out Ankan och Marre’s new video below, and buy/download Barnmusik med Ankan och Marre Vol. 1&2 on all major music streaming platforms, such as Amazon, iTunes, and Spotify.

One of the Swedish companies attending is called Greater Than, the creator of Enerfy driving, a technological platform that reduces fuel consumption and increases driver control. An onboard diagnostic module is inserted into the USB port of the car which syncs with the driver’s smartphone, and the gathered information is fed to the cloud. Enerfy Driving gives low-risk or high-risk scores. Low-risk drivers are those that generate the least amount of environmental impact while driving. A low-risk score translates into more competitive insurance costs.

Volvo Cars San Diego is one of the sponsors of the event and they will also attend to show their new hybrid car XC60. The XC60 T8 utilizes the Volvo Drive-E, which results in much lower emissions than other cars, while still being one of the most powerful cars in the Volvo product range.

Eliason Merit Award: Celebrating LA’s Most Creative Swedes

0

The air felt charged with excitement when LA’s most hardworking, talented and creative Swedes came together to celebrate their very own Linus Sandgren, winner of the 30th Annual Eliason Merit Award. The event was hosted by the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce in LA, at the private Hollywood Hills residence of Jonas Thålin, CEO of Absolut Elyx.

You probably know Linus Sandgren as the Oscar-winning cinematographer of the film La La Land. He is also famous for his work with David O Russell on the films American Hustle and Joy, and for the Swedish film Storm, for which he won a Guldbagge Award in 2007.

He made the following statement upon finding out that he was the winner of the Eliason Merit Award, 2017:

“I am deeply honored to be recognized by SACC LA for my work, and I am especially flattered to be acknowledged as a deputy for Swedish influence in the American Film Industry! I hope that I, by accepting this award, can inspire more Swedes to bring their talent to the U.S.”

Linus Sandgren was presented with a beautiful glass award-statue made by Kosta Boda during an intimate award ceremony led by SACC LA’s CEO Gudrun Giddings. He also received a lifetime membership in SACC LA.

Previous winners of the prestigious award, which honors individuals and businesses that have contributed significantly to strengthening the Swedish-American relations, include three-time Oscar winner Per Hallberg, as well as Swedish actress Maud Adams, both of whom attended this year’s festivities.

Swedes in the States had the pleasure of talking with Linus Sandgren minutes after he received his award.

(Translated from Swedish.)

Congratulations on winning the Eliason Merit Award!

Thank you.

I also want to congratulate you on your Academy Award. I love La La Land, I keep watching it over and over.

Thank you. I feel very touched hearing that.

What is up next for you? Do you have any Swedish projects lined up for the future?

I may work on a Swedish production at some point, I have done so in the past, but currently, my next film is already set up; it is another collaboration with Damien Chazelle (writer and director of La La Land) that we are filming in Atlanta right now.  It’s called First Man and is starring Ryan Gosling. We are working with many of the same people who worked on La La Land, the composer, for instance, Justin Hurwitz, and the costume designer, Mary Zophres, as well as my own crew.

It must be great working with people you already know.

It’s fun working with new people as well, of course, but it usually takes a while figuring out each other’s style, so when you find people you like working with it’s nice if you can continue working together.

What is the film about?

It is about the astronaut Neil Armstrong. While it involves the legendary mission to the moon, it’s not a space movie in the traditional sense. It’s a deeply emotional film that deals with human relationships and the tragedy of losing a child. Everyone involved in the mission, who traveled in space together, ended up being very close and they shared a lot of human drama in their lives.

We are hearing a lot about virtual reality in the film world right now. Do you have any interest exploring that in your work?

I think VR is a lot of fun. I feel like it is perfect for games, but I have a difficult time seeing how it would work in films where you want to be able to control the story and cut to a close up for instance. You need to decide what the audience sees. VR isn’t really like that, it might end up being more like a live theater experience. But I really believe in it for other things. I saw some incredible VR where you stand on a floe in the sea and a giant whale swims up to you. Also, I tried a game with my daughters where you are a bird flying around. I think it is all very cool.

Again, congratulations! We can’t wait to see your next film when it comes out!

After the award ceremony, the guests were treated to a performance by up-and-coming Swedish band Smith and Thell, who are in LA to write and record songs for their next album, along with tunes played by DJ Eiko Hara.

The rest of the evening was spent mingling in a relaxed and intimate setting while enjoying cocktails made with Absolute Elyx’s smooth luxury vodka, which is made entirely by hand in a vintage copper still from 1921.

Three-time Oscar winner, Per Hallberg, was enjoying the party with his wife, Holly Hallberg, founder of the popular Scandinavian design shop Huset.

“It is easy and a lot of fun to create Swedish events like this one,” she said, “because there are so many extremely talented Swedes here in LA, who are eager to help and be a part of something like this.”

She had help organizing the event from SACC LA’s PR and Marketing Manager Caroline Sandström, Event Marketing Manager Madeleine Hultin as well as Finance and Account Manager Madeleine Rask.

Kanye West’s creative director creates collection for IKEA

0

In June 2017 at IKEA announced their next collaboration with Virgil Abloh, one of the most sought-after collaborator right now. The collection is said to be created for millennials moving into their first home. Abloh plans to work with students to create the pieces, and although details of what will be included in the collection have not yet been relieved, IKEA says it will launch in 2019.

At IKEA’s Democratic Design day in Älmhult, Abloh showed his own take on the classic blue Frakta bag, created from cardboard and with the text “SCULPTURE” on the side.

Abloh is a fashion designer and founder of fashion label Off-White. He is also well-known for his long-time collaborations with the rapper Kanye West. The two started working together in 2003 when Abloh started designing merchandise for Kanye. Later, when the rapper started his own fashion label he hired Abloh as a fashion adviser and creative director.

At a presentation on Periscope with IKEA’s creative leader Henrik Most, Abloh, who has worked with brands like Nike, said that the collaboration with IKEA is the most important design project he’s ever taken on.

“We’ve been curious about Virgil Abloh for some time,” said Most, “Him being a multi-creative persona who doesn’t care about boundaries combined with his close connections to young people, their needs and wants. It made us curious.”

Earlier this year the luxury fashion house Balenciaga created a bag looking a lot like the original IKEA Frakta bag, but with the ludicrous price of $2,145. IKEA then responded with a guide on how to spot the difference between a real IKEA bag and a copycat.

Abloh has already given a sneak peek of the collection on his Instagram, he posted a photo of a classic black and grey oriental carpet with the print “Keep off”.

We can’t wait to see what’s more to come!

In this video, you can watch the whole IKEA Democratic Design Days, and Virgil comes on at around the 19-minute mark.

Jessica Biel’s Au Fudge – A Parent’s Dream Come True

0

If you are the parent of a young child, dining out can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Odds are you’ve left your half-eaten food on the table while you chase a restless toddler through a crowded restaurant, or that you’ve tried to quickly get some food into your mouth while simultaneously trying to stop your squirming baby from pulling the tablecloth off the table.

Now picture this scenario instead:

You and your child are enjoying a nice lunch with some friends on the gorgeous patio of your favorite restaurant. When your toddler starts getting restless, you excuse yourselves and step into a play area filled with toys and activities where you drop your child off with a friendly au pair – and return to your table to finish your meal in peace while your son or daughter plays happily and safely close by.

Does it sound too good to be true? It’s not!

At Au Fudge, a kid-friendly restaurant on Melrose, co-owned by actress Jessica Biel, you can do just that!

In addition to excellent food, a great kid’s menu, and a full bar, the restaurant also offers babysitting while you eat! There are organized classes and activities to choose from, such as yoga and cooking, or, for $15, you can opt for free play supervised by an au pair for children aged 2 and up. For younger children, personal au pairs are available for $40/hour, if you call and arrange it in advance.

The indoor restaurant and bar are situated right next to the playroom – parents can watch their children play through the windows while they eat or enjoy a drink.

The playroom is filled with toys and offers activities for the younger children, while older children can sneak up the golden stairwell to the tree-house to hang out with friends.

The portions are generous, the service quick and friendly. Lunch entrees range from $15-$28.

The marketplace offers coffee, champagne, baked goods and custom order cakes, along with cute and original toys, accessories, clothing, and books. While some items are quite expensive, you can also find fun trinkets for just a few dollars each.

The team behind Au Fudge is currently in the process of launching Au Fudge CAMP (Center for Art Music and Play) in addition to the restaurant. The center is located in West Hollywood and will offer over 20 different classes for children ages 6 months to 10 years old.
