The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce (SACC) is the creator behind Innovate46, a platform for Swedish and American startups and entrepreneurs within the sustainable solutions industry. The annual Innovate46 conference is a high-level, full-day event with a focus on Swedish innovation.

This year the event took place on October 11th at the Nasdaq MarketSite. Each year the platform contributes to Swedish startups with the Anders Wall Award for Exceptional Entrepreneurship, awarded to a Swedish company active in the United States. In an effort to support Swedish startups in the U.S. SACC New York collaborates with the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth also known as Tillväxtverket. For this years event nine prolific Swedish startups were invited to the Innovate46 conference of 2017 for an on-stage presentation and pitch. The conference was a success and ended with the prestigious Anders Wall Award for Exceptional Entrepreneurship.

Following is a description of the
Anders Wall Award for Exceptional Entrepreneurship.
Five up and coming nominated entrepreneurs are selected to pitch for an impressive jury of seasoned executives, business professionals, and investors. The winner will be awarded a $25,000 cash grant. The grant shall be awarded an entrepreneur or a group of entrepreneurs which truly benefit from both the reward and honor of winning and is to be used to further expand the company’s operations.

Among the companies that made onstage presentations during the Innovate46 conference, the jury selected this year’s winner Erik Gatenholm, Founder & CEO of CELLINK. These were the five criteria when the jury announced the winner.

– The entrepreneur possesses exceptional entrepreneurial capacity and ability to create and lead a successful business.
– The entrepreneur is an exemplary ambassador for entrepreneurship.
– The entrepreneur has identified and created a product, technology or service, which generates increased customer satisfaction, or has recognized an innovative market niche.
– The company possesses a high probability to succeed in the United States.
– The technology, product, or service has a proven traction on the U.S. market and possesses a high probability to scale on the American market.

American vs Swedish Parental Leave – and why there needs to be a change for American employees

4

We recently wrote an article about Swedes being one of the most well-traveled citizens in the world, and Americans one of the least well-traveled. The article brought a whole new discussion to the table about the policies that most Americans employees have versus the policies that exist for Scandinavian employees, making it possible for Swedes to travel internationally more often. Apart from the obvious reason that it is easier to make an international trip from Sweden than it is from the United States, other arguments like vacation and parental leave policies were discussed.

We decided that we wanted to dig deeper into that topic. How different do you think the parental leave policies are in Sweden versus the United States?

General Policies in Sweden

Nordic countries have some of the most generous and equal parental leave policies in the world. Sweden provides a very family-friendly environment to new parents and offers ample support to employees at all levels. Here are some points to note:

  • Swedish parents can get access to 480 days of paid parental leave and one or the other parent has to take at least 90 days, which means fathers get paid leave as well.
  • Women working in labor-intensive and strenuous jobs are entitled to additional benefits before and after childbirth.
  • Parents are entitled to family leave whether they give birth or adopt. Which makes parents in same-sex relationships able to take days off.
  • For that first 390 days, parents are entitled to 80% of their salary while the remaining 90 days are paid by flat rate.

What kind of parental leave does America offer?

In the United States, for the most part, the parental leave policies are left up to the individual employers and companies bear the cost burden with little support from the government. This allows businesses to pick and choose what kind of parental leave they offer. Others provide little to no parental leave and the benefits are distributed unequally amongst employees at different levels.

Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

During the Clinton era, the Family Medical Leave Act that was introduced. The act offers 12 weeks of job-protected leave but was however unpaid and for different reasons isn’t available to everyone employed in the United States. A combination of private and public policies grant only 12% of US non-government workers access to paid leave.

Even the new policy initiated by the Trump administration lags far behind other countries when it comes to paid leave and is specially targeted towards women so there’s no similar protection offered to new fathers. Experts have called the family cover insufficient because it only offers women 6 weeks of paid leave with an equivalent of 2.8 weeks of salary.

This can be claimed under unemployment benefits rather than rightfully earned salary. Six weeks is a very short leave and doesn’t allow the mother enough time to recover, much less bond with her child. This is light years behind the policies provided by other industrialized nations in the world.

Why we think the United States should adopt a kinder vacation/parental leave policy for people working:

The benefits of a parental leave similar to the Scandinavian policies are many. Not only for the child but also for the parents.

• The biggest benefit of better parental leave policies is the recovery of child and mother, and the opportunity for both parents to bond with the child.

  • It’s easier for parents to go back to work when they are ready, instead of having to make the choice to quit or be a stay at home parent in order to be there for their child’s first months on earth. In the United States, it would make it easier for the women who want to, to re-enter the workforce.
  • Pregnancy and birth can be hard on the mother’s body and allow her ample time to recover from the physical and mental strain benefits the mother, child, and the family as a whole.
  • Raising a child is stressful enough, with parental leave, job security, and financial stability; parents have a better time adjusting and can provide better care to their child.

Although the American government fails to understand the importance of parental leave and facilitating raising children with both parents (if possible) involved, the corporate world is starting to react. Companies like Apple, Ikea, Nordstrom, Bank of America, and Levi’s, etc. offer substantial maternity benefits across the board and have equal policies more similar to the ones found in Scandinavia. Scandinavian corporations with offices in the United States were some of the first to adopt Scandinavian policies in the workspace offering their U.S. employees benefits they rarely had seen before.

With the stress companies today face with retaining talent, vacation and parental leave policies are changing. Industry leaders are speaking up against the harsh policies in comparison to the rest of the western world. They are speaking up for work-life balance, gender equality the increase in productivity and efficiency that those changes would make.

What do you think? Who do you think will be the driving force in policy changes? And when do you think that change will happen?

For many, fall is the favorite season of the year. You get to buy an excessive amount of cozy candles, cuddle up under the blanket with a good book without feeling guilty about missing the few summer days that are left, and you get to dress up in nice fall coats. We at Swedes in the States decided to put together some fall fashion inspiration by taking a look at our native countrymen. There is no denying that Scandinavian ladies know how to dress up. IKEA just acquired TaskRabbit and they did it for you.

0

IKEA has acquired TaskRabbit!

The Swedish retailer released a press release on Thursday evening saying “IKEA Group (Ingka Holding B.V. and its controlled entities), the world’s largest home furnishing retailer, has signed a conditional agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in TaskRabbit, Inc., an on-demand services platform company. TaskRabbit currently operates in the United States and London (UK) and will continue to function as an independent company.”

Although most Swedes have a Ph.D. in IKEA furniture assembling, the rest of the world is still trying to get a hang of it, or most likely just giving up as Assembling Ikea furniture is the most requested job on the TaskRabbit platform.

So what does this mean for IKEA shoppers?

This means that it will get way easier for Ikea customers in London locations, and all over the United States, to get someone over pronto to put together your Ikea furniture. Yes, you heard me. You don’t ever have to deal with that swirly manual screwdriver ever again.

It also means that Ikea is gearing up to take a step further into the digital world, probably feeling a bit stressed to do so by competitor Amazon.

“We will be able to learn from TaskRabbit’s digital expertise, while also providing IKEA customers additional ways to access flexible and affordable service solutions to meet the needs of today’s customer,” said Jesper Brodin, president, and CEO of IKEA Group, in the press release.

I suppose they felt that the assembly videos they posted on youtube just weren’t enough.

Good things ahead for Ikea! Now can you please also hear our prayers and create an online shop for your food, please? Thanks!

Swedes are among the most well-traveled citizens in the world

1

The citizens of Hong Kong take the prize of being the most well-traveled citizens in the world. With the average citizen taking a whopping 11.5 trips for leisure per year. However, it is important to keep in mind that trips to the Chinese mainland occur frequently for Chinese and Hong Kongese, with many of them actually living in China and working in Hong Kong. We are unsure if this is considered in the MoveHub survey.

How about Sweden? The average Swede takes a 1.5 international trip per year. Swedes can most likely thank great parental leave and vacation day policies, and a passport that is considered one of the worlds most powerful (giving us visa-free entries to 157 countries) for that.

When it comes to the United States, things are not as exciting. Despite having the highest GDP in the world, the citizens of the United States are, according to the MoveHub survey, one of the least-traveled citizens in the world with the average American only taking 0.2 international trips per year.

Americans are unfortunately limited by, ridiculously bad vacation and parental leave policies, and only 46% of the population owns a passport, comparing to Sweden where more than 90% of the population has a passport.
On the other hand, the United States is a huge country with plenty to see, so maybe it’s not so surprising after all. When it comes to domestic travels, Americans takes the second place as most well-traveled in the world.

Countries with the most well-traveled citizens in the world:

  1. Hong Kong – 11.4 trips per year, per person
  2. Luxembourg – 2.56 trips per year, per person
  3. Hungary – 1.62 trips per year, per person
  4. Sweden – 1.5 trips per year, per person
  5. Finland – 1.46 trips per year, per person
  6. Ireland – 1.44 trips per year, per person
  7. Singapore – 1.44 trips per year, per person
  8. Switzerland – 1.42 trips per year, per person
  9. Denmark – 1.4 trips per year, per person
  10. Albania – 1.36 trips per year, per person

Recipe: Dreamy Crayfish Soup

1

My mamma makes the best crayfish soup, in fact, it was the first thing she cooked for my husband during his first trip to Sweden back in 2013. It’s a rich, velvety soup with bits of heaviness. It serves perfectly fine as either a starter or an entree, and the trick is to serve it with garlic toast. It’s my mamma’s legendary crayfish soup, and she’s agreed to let me publish it here for all of you. You will want to try this one out, and yes, you can thank me later.

Mama’s Crayfish Soup
– 3 Middle sized carrots
– 1 Fish broth cube
– 2 Cups of water
– 1,5 Cups of crème fraîche
– 9 Oz. Kräftost or if unavailable cream cheese
– 12 Oz. Crayfish tails (cooked and deveined)
– Fresh dill, salt and pepper to taste

How to make it
1. Pour up the water in a medium-sized pot and bring to a boil. It is possible to trade 1 cup of water to 1 cup of dry white wine if wanted, you should try it! I usually do, and hey, don’t forget to pour a glass for yourself too.

2. Add the fish broth cube into the boiling pot and let simmer until dissolved. Whilst doing so roughly grate the carrots and put aside in a bowl.

3. Time to add the creamy kräftost, or cream cheese into the same pot (1) and stir under medium heat. If you are having issues with melting the cheese, pour the warm mixture in a blender and gently pulse it until fully incorporated together. You can also use an immersion blender to whisk the mixture right in the same pot. Pour the soup base back into the pot.

4. The next step is to carefully add the grated carrots into the soup, with chopped fresh dill, salt, and pepper. Taste the soup and add after your own taste buds. I personally love to add Tony’s Creole Seasoning for that additional kick but do as you please.

5. Lastly, add the crayfish tails, let simmer for just a few minutes since the tails are already cooked. Heat up some garlic toast in the oven and voilà, you have just cooked my mama’s crayfish soup. I hope you will enjoy it and let me know how you liked it!
