IKEA Fires 7500 Employees Worldwide

0

IKEA is restructuring the organization. As a result, 7500 jobs will be gone worldwide.

“We are introducing a new type of organization,” said Håkan Svedman, CEO of IKEA Sweden.

“As we implement these improvements to our organization, it is with the utmost respect as to how our employees will be affected. As soon as we know which of our employees it might involve, we will, in alignment with our values, and the union support every individual, as much as we can, to find the best solution possible for the employees next step, whether it’s within or outside IKEA,” writes Karin Bergman, Head of HR in Sweden in a press release.

Reconstructing the organization comes as a part of IKEA’s plan to become more digitalized, in an effort to keep up with the emerging online retail industry. New warehouses and city stores are also to be established as a part of the plan.

The digitalization effort is estimated to create 11,500 new jobs worldwide at IKEA over a 2 year period.

“IKEA should be ahead of the game, even online,” says Håkan Svedman, in the press release.

Scandinavian Airlines New Ad Captures Tear-jerking Moments Perfectly

2

One of the best things about the holiday season is the joy of going home to see your friends and family – and SAS’s new ad captures that moment perfectly.

“The Arrivals,” a short film that features real people and a few actors, was shot at Kastrup International Airport (CPH) in Copenhagen by photographer Peter Funch and filmmaker Jeppe Rønde.

Video below

The video, which already has over a million views, follows dozens of travelers of different ages, genders, religions, and backgrounds as they come back home from traveling, studying abroad, getting medical treatment, and so on. Although the people and situations are different, it’s a heartwarming moment to see families, friends, and partners reunited.

Annelie Nässén, SAS’ Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, notes that it’s important for the company to bring people closer together through travel: “We at SAS, together with our travelers, bring a lot back with us from our journeys. We bring home inspiration and courage, perspective and love. Travel changes us, and when it changes us, we change the world. With our new campaign “The Arrivals” we want to show that travelers return richer.”

The ad is perfect for this upcoming holiday season when more than 54.3 million Americans will travel to their family for Thanksgiving — a 4.8 percent increase over last year.

The ad finishes with a strong message – “Sometimes the journey is life-changing. Sometimes we changed the world. But, most times, the world changes us.”

Swedish Schools To Crack Down On Candy And Meat

0

Less candy and meat, more fruits and vegetables: that’s the vision that’s on every school’s mind right now.

Livsmedelsverket, also known as the Swedish National Food Agency, has just released new a new set of guidelines, “Bra måltider i skolan” (Good meals in schools), addressed to all schools in Sweden.

“Schooltime is an important tool to smooth out health differences. A hungry student has a hard time learning, so school food is especially important for children who do not eat well at home,” says Anna-Karin Quetel, a nutritionist at Livsmedelsverket.

The Food Administration believes that young people are eating too little vegetables and too much meat. They suggest that schools should lower the amount of meat and serve more vegetables in a school lunch. Other solutions include offering several alternative dishes, of which at least one vegetarian dish that everyone has to take and work systematically to reduce food welfare.

According to Quetel, the board believes that school counselors should not serve candy, soda, ice cream or sweet pastries. “The school cafeteria should provide good, useful and environmentally nourishing snacks such as sandwiches, fruits, vegetables, smoothies or yogurt.”

What do you think? Should schools stop selling candy and sweets to students? Let us know in the comments!

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Coming To Cinema Near You?

0

Zlatan Ibrahimovic certainly lives an interesting life, especially now that he has gone on tour to promote his recently-released autobiography book. What’s in store for the Swedish football superstar? Let’s take a look at his recent interview!

Ever since moving to Los Angeles to play for LA Galaxy, Zlatan has adjusted well to the Hollywood lifestyle. He’s been featured in a variety of commercials for brands such as VISA and Volvo – but to him, this is just a “small step.” The superstar is looking to expand into the world of film:

“I have felt for many years that I am myself more and more in front of the camera. That I could do more, for example being an actor,” Zlatan told reporters. “The good guy, the bad guy – I would be able to do anything. I can adapt – I’m like [a] chameleon.”

“There are various offers from the movie world. But it has to be right. I don’t want to be an extra in the background. A good part – then I’m in the picture.”

And when asked what role he would be most keen on playing, Zlatan wasted no time in answering:

“I think leading man – something like Rambo, Bourne Identity because I think I have the skills to do those things […] Somebody says I could be like the bad guy in the movie because my English is like Ivan Drago. But I see myself better than that.”

Is an action movie starring Zlatan on the horizon? — “Why not? A Jason Bourne, a James Bond. But as you say: not the good guy but the bad guy.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – coming to a theater near you? Stay tuned!

Trump Nominates PayPal Founder As United States New Ambassador To Sweden

0

For almost a year, the U.S. has been without official representation and an ambassador in Sweden. The last ambassador, Azita Raji, was appointed by Barack Obama back in 2016 but only stayed in office for a year. Her predecessor, Mark Brzezinski, also appointed by Obama, was the ambassador between 2011 and 2015.

After Mr. Trump stepped up as president in 2016 and Azita Raji ended her assignment in 2017, there had been no new ambassador appointed, and instead, the native Californian, Daniel Lindwall, has acted as the chargé d’Affaires. Basically, a stand-in while a new ambassador is waiting to be appointed.

But there are good news on the horizon for Swedish – American diplomatic relations, and it comes in the form of entrepreneur and investor, Ken Howery, probably best known for being one of the co-founders of PayPal, and good friend of Peter Thiel. After co-founding PayPal over 20 years ago, which was later sold to eBay for staggering $1.5 billion, he went on co-founding Founders Fund together with Peter Thiel, which is known to have investments in companies like SpaceX and Airbnb.

Mr. Trump announced earlier this week that he plans on nominating Ken Howery as the ambassador to Sweden. But before Mr. Howery can start practicing his Swedish, immersing himself in our beloved Fika culture, celebrating every pastry that exists and awkwardly avoiding his neighbor at any cost, the nomination has to be approved and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Welcome To The Future: Norway Is Working On Introducing Robot Mailmen

0

In an era where you can instantly send someone a message through Email, Twitter, Facebook, iMessage, and more, what’s the point of snail mail? If you live in Norway, there’s a fun chance to see a robot deliver your mail!

Thanks to a new partnership between Posten-Norge, Norwegian’s government-run postal service, and Buddy Mobility, a San Francisco- and Oslo-based robotics startup, a “robot mailman” might be a possibility in the near future.

Buddy Mobility notes, “Our robot provides Posten with operational cost savings to offset revenue losses from dramatically decreasing mail volumes. At the same time, the robot offers new revenue streams around package and parcel delivery.”

Although this might seem like a novel idea, the Posten bot is not the first of its kind: similar mailman robots have been tested all around the world. In the United States, several start-ups have been experimenting with postal bots in college towns, and in Germany, DHL’s PostBot is already testing a few different routes in the city of Bad Hersfeld.

So, how does it work? The Posten bot looks like a large box with wheels and plenty of compartments on its side that are filled with envelopes and small parcels. The robot can travel around 6 kilometers per hour (4mph) — yes, you read that right — and will be able to deliver mail to 100 recipients per day. The robot won’t be able to deliver mail directly to a customer’s mailbox. Instead, the robot will “park” in front of the recipient’s house, and the recipient will have to open a special app on their phone to unlock the box and retrieve their mail. Afterward, the robot will head back to the post office to recharge its battery and refill its supply for the next day.

Could a New Avicii Album Be on the Way?

0

Although it’s been more than six months since Avicii, unfortunately, passed away, there may be a hint of good news for his fans: Avicii’s family is working with his producers to release his final album.

Aloe Blacc

Aloe Blacc, a collaborator and friend of Avicii who provided vocals on the hit song Wake Me Up, recently spoke to reporters about the possibility of one last Avicii album with Tim Bergling’s parents currently being in talks with the Swedish DJ’s record label.

“There are several songs left,” he tells reporters, “I believe the record label is working with his parents and the estate to bring these unreleased songs to the public. But for me there’s no rush – I would leave that to the parents.”

Although details are limited and there is no release date just yet, Blacc mentioned that there will be at least 10 “extraordinary” tracks on the album.

Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii.

Speaking on the topic of their hit collaboration, Blacc also noted, “It’s still a song of celebrations and nostalgia, and hope for the future. I think the hope for the future part is even stronger… Avicii’s death has been a call to a lot of young folks for people to take better care of themselves and surround themselves with people who are looking out for their best interests.

Svart Hotel is the Epic Hotel at the Base of a Glacier

0

Planning a trip to Norway? Forget about booking that basic hotel or hostel – we have a better suggestion.

Svart Hotel, based in a small town above Norway’s Arctic Circle, is the first ever energy-positive hotel, which means that it will generate more energy than it uses.

“Building an energy positive and low-impact hotel is an essential factor to create a sustainable tourist destination respecting the unique features of the plot; the rare plant species, the clean waters and the blue ice of the Svartisen glacier,” notes Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Founding Partner at Snøhetta, the architecture agency that designed the Svart hotel.

The luxury accommodation will be set at the base of a glacier with futuristic architecture features, such as a wrap-around panoramic view of the surrounding nature and lake. Speaking of nature — the name Svart comes from the Norwegian word for black, which is a direct tribute to the dark blue ice of the Svartisen glacier.

Active travelers who crave adventure will love the hotel: there will be hiking expeditions to the nearby glacier; ice climbing; and kayaks can even be launched from the guest’s room. Since Svart hotel is located in the Arctic Circle, there are plenty of chances to see the Northern Lights.

The hotel is scheduled to open in 2021.

Swedish Actress Malin Åkerman Becomes a US Citizen

0

Yesterday was a very special day for Swedish actress Malin Akerman: she became a naturalized US citizen!

In a caption on her Instagram page, Malin writes: “I am now officially an American Girl!! ?? […] This Nov 6th will be the very first time, ever, in my life that I get the privilege to vote!!! I feel deeply honored and emotional. Thank you to all before us who have paved the path so that we could live in a free democratic country.”

Malin, who was originally born in Stockholm, Sweden, but moved to Canada as a child, joins a long list of Swedish-American celebrities such as golfer Annika Sörenstam, actor Joel Kinnaman, and actress Greta Garbo.

She is most famous for her roles in the films Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, 27 Dresses, and TV shows Entourage and Billions.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services even conducted a mini-interview with Malin to get to know her:

Q: What do you remember about the day you came to the U.S.?

A: The first time I came to officially live in the U.S., it felt surreal. It felt like living in a vacation where I could see the Hollywood sign, palm trees, and beaches. I was so hopeful and excited to build a home here in the U.S.

Q: What does being an American mean to you?

A: I am very excited to become an American. My son was born here and is an American and I just feel like this is my home.

Congratulations to Malin for this milestone!
