Greta Thunberg Patents Her Own Name

0

Environmental activist Gret Thunberg has found a creative way to stop others from slandering her name — by patenting it!

On Wednesday, Greta announced that she has registered both her own name and her “Fridays For Future” global protest movement as trademarks. The move comes after there were multiple attempts to hijack her name for fraudulent purposes.

My name and the #FridaysForFuture movement are constantly being used for commercial purposes without any consent whatsoever,” the 17-year-old Swede wrote on her Instagram account.

“I assure you, I and the other school strikers have absolutely no interest in trademarks. But unfortunately, it needs to be done.”

Greta became the face of climate change in August 2018, when she skipped school to spend the day outside Sweden’s parliament with a sign labeled, “school strike for climate”. Since then, she has become a role model for young people around the world. But fame comes at a price.

Greta continued that “there are still people who are trying to impersonate me or falsely claim that they ‘represent’ me in order to communicate with high profile people, politicians, media, artists, etc.”

There had also been instances of marketing, product selling and people collecting money “in my and the movement’s name,” she wrote.

Sweden Loses More Than 2 Million Air Travelers All While Flygskam Takes Off

0

Last year, we reported on a trend that was taking the European world by storm. Flygskam, the Swedish word for “flight shaming” meaning the “feeling of embarrassment or being ashamed to fly due to the environmental impacts.”

Now, half a year later, we’re seeing concrete numbers as a result of flight shaming: Sweden has seen a 4% drop in the number of people flying through its airports. To put it into perspective, more than 40 million people traveled through the country’s 10 airports last year, compared with 42 million during 2018.

What’s even more shocking is the figure for domestic travel, which was down a whopping 9%, according to Sweden’s airport operators, Swedavia.

Swedavia spokesman Robert Pletzin said there were a number of reasons for the decrease. Besides flight shaming, factors also include a large Swedish aviation tax, worries about a softening economy, and the weakening of the Swedish krona.

As part of the flygskam movement, more than 22,500 people have signed a pledge to be flight-free in 2020. Will you join them? Let us know in the comments below!

Chinese Ambassador Cautioned By Swedish Government Over Threats

0

Chinese ambassador to Sweden Gui Congyou caused a ruckus this past weekend after he slandered local Swedish media because they “have a habit of criticizing, accusing and smearing China.”

Congyou, who said the remarks during an interview with SVT (Sweden’s public broadcaster), then went on to compare the relationship between Swedish and Chinese media to a situation where “a 48kg weight boxer keeps challenging an 86kg weight boxer to a fight.”

Three parties in Sweden’s parliament have already petitioned for Gui Congyou to be thrown out of the country. Sweden’s foreign minister, Ann Linde, has already denied the option of expelling Gui Congyou, but she also made it clear that Sweden won’t accept threats from China.

Gui Congyou, who was appointed ambassador to Sweden in 2017, has repeatedly angered lawmakers in the country with his remarks over the years.

This isn’t the first time when the relationship between Sweden and China went sour.

Chinese-born Swedish publisher Gui Minhai has been detained since late 2015 by Chinese authorities, who accuse him of writing several books that are critical of China’s leadership. Ambassador Gui Congyou had something to say about Minhai as well, calling him a “lie-fabricator” who “committed serious offenses in both China and Sweden.”

Commenting on Swedish media’s coverage of Gui Minhai, Gui Congyou cited a Chinese proverb: “We treat our friends with fine wine, but we have shotguns for our enemies.”

What do you think will happen to Mr. Congyou? Let us know in the comments below!

Now You Can Go to Bed in Sweden, Wake up in London

0

Big news for frequent travelers: Sweden has just introduced a game-changing new route that will make travel across Europe easier and eco-friendlier.

Trafikverket, also known as Sweden’s Transport Administration, recently unveiled plans for the future of overnight sleeper trains. Under the new proposal, these trains will run from Malmö to Cologne, Germany, before connecting onward to other European cities.

One of the most promising routes unveiled by the Trafikverket is the Sweden-England route, where the train would leave Malmö at 7:40 pm, pick up passengers in Copenhagen an hour later at 8:40 pm, and then arrive in Cologne at 6 am. Current connections would allow passengers to arrive in London at 11:57 am in time for a lunch meeting. Other connections include Amsterdam by 9:28 am, Munich by 11:08 am, and Paris by 10:05 am.

“As a first step, we propose to proceed with a connection between Malmö and Germany, preferably Cologne,” said Anna Fällbom, a senior official at Trafikverket.

“Travel time on the route is reasonable and there is a good opportunity for continued connections from Cologne.”

The service, which is set to start in 2022 or 2023, is part of a train expansion proposed by the Swedish government to provide a better alternative to short-haul flights, which are rapidly contributing to climate change. In fact, 2019 saw the rise of “Flygskam” in Sweden, which means flight shaming those that take flights instead of trains.

Three Large Avalanches Strike Iceland’s Westfjords, Trapping Family, Damaging Property, and Destroying Harbor

0

Earlier this week, three large avalanches struck Northwest Iceland in succession, damaging property and shocking residents. The avalanches included two Flateyri and one in Súgandafjörður.

Although nobody was seriously hurt, a teenage girl was trapped in her house and had to be rescued by ICE-SAR, also known as the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue. The avalanche damaged part of her home and trapped the girl inside.

Her two siblings, a five-year-old girl, and a nine-year-old boy, escaped with their mother through a window before alerting the emergency services of the girl stuck inside. The coast guard ship Þór transported the girl and her family to Ísafjörður where they received treatment.

The girl’s doctor noted that, “Her room was filled with snow. Thick snow. Like concrete. Fortunately, rescuers worked quickly to shovel the snow and help her escape. The girl’s mother knew exactly where she was … there was a nurse in Flateryi, very experienced, who warmed the girl.”

An emergency phase has been declared in Flateyri and Súgandafjörður in the wake of the avalanches.

Besides property damage, the boat harbor in Flateyri was destroyed.

Magnús Einar Manússon, director of ICE-SAR in Flateyri, described the damage:

“The small boat harbor is gone. All of the boats have sunk. We estimate that seven boats have sunk or are half-submerged by the harbor,” he stated.

Unfortunately, these recent avalanches have reminded the locals of the deadly avalanches of 1995, when 20 people died after a similar avalanche struck Flateyri. Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir stated, “I think all of us are startled. I took the time this morning, as soon as I heard the news, to contact a few residents in the Westfjords. Everyone is, of course, quite startled, recalling the events of 1995, which are still fresh in our memory.”

An orange weather alert is still in effect for certain parts of the Westfjords. Roads leading in and out of Ísafjörður are impassable and no flights will depart from the Ísafjörður Airport until further notice.

IKEA Bans Single-Use Plastic Across All Stores Worldwide

0

IKEA just joined the sustainability movement with a big announcement.

IKEA’s sustainability strategy, aptly-titled People and Planet Positive, wants to make sure that all of the plastic used in IKEA home furnishings are made only from renewable or recycled materials by 2030.

This means that, from January 1st, 2020, the furniture company banned single-use plastic across all of its stores. This includes plastic from the home furnishing range, as well as items like straws, cutlery, cups, and plates from their restaurants, cafes, and bistros. Instead, these items will be made from 100% renewable sources.

Brendan Seale, Head of Sustainability at IKEA Retail Canada, noted that “Removing single-use plastic from our home furnishing range and from our restaurants, cafes, and bistros is an important step to help our customers and our company contribute to a world without waste.

However, IKEA isn’t new to the eco-friendly game: Today, more than 60% of the IKEA product range is based on renewable materials, and the company is looking to increase this over the next few years.

Scandinavian Airlines Relaunches Copenhagen – Los Angeles Route

0

Great news for Swedes in the States travelers: Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has just relaunched its nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Copenhagen Airport (CPH).

This historic route, which was dubbed the “polar express” because it flew over the polar ice cap regions, originally began in 1954 and continued until 1994.

SAS  is offering the flight six times a week, and will increase that frequency to daily service starting on March 31st.

The service between LAX and CPH will be operated using a combination of Airbus A330 and A340 aircrafts. Beginning in early June, SAS will also use an Airbus A350 for this service.

Flight times are expected to be 11 hours and 10 minutes to Copenhagen Airport, and 11 hours and 40 minutes on the return flight to LAX. Flights are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays as follows (all times local):

Los Angeles welcomes the world, and we are thrilled to welcome direct flights from and to a nation often considered as home to the happiest people on the planet,” said Joe Buscaino, Chair of the Tourism Committee of Los Angeles.

Justin Erbacci, Interim Chief Executive Officer of LAWA, added: “This service will stimulate new opportunities for international travelers to visit L.A. and for Angelenos to experience the exceptional beauty, art, food, culture and vibrancy of Denmark’s capital city and other destinations in Scandinavia and Northern Europe.”

Indeed, one of the main reasons that SAS reopened this route was due to the huge demand from leisure travelers in Denmark.

Välkommen tillbaka till Los Angeles, Scandinavian Airlines!

Who Are The Most Eligible Nordic Bachelors & Bachelorettes in the States?

0

Swedes in the States are looking for the most wanted bachelors and bachelorettes!

In time for Valentine’s Day, we are introducing a new, fun and lighthearted concept for our readers to participate in. Starting today and running until the 13th of February, Swedes in the States readers will have the chance to nominate and vote for their favorite Nordic bachelor and/or bachelorette for consideration.

We are searching far and wide for the most interesting, kind, gorgeous, desired, talented, (you fill in the blank!) Nordic bachelor and bachelorettes based in the States … and we need your help!

Since it is hard to establish a set rule as to who is single, in a relationship, whether it’s complicated or really not that complicated at all, we are for the sake of simplicity going straight of the dictionary term for bachelor and bachelorette, which is a “man (or woman) who is not married.” This is regardless of their current relationship status, which means that the candidate may be in a relationship – just as long as they are not married.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

The requirements are that the candidate:

  • Must currently be unmarried
  • Must hold a Nordic passport (dual citizens accepted)
  • Must primarily be based in the United States

All entries are anonymous, and must be submitted at the following form:

A list of 10 bachelors and bachelorettes will be chosen based on our readers’ votes by February 13, 2020. Swedes in the States and Söderberg Media reserves the right, at the company’s discretion, to modify the results, as needed.

Norway Sees Warmest January Day On Record

8

While Stockholm and Helsinki are “enjoying” typical winter weather — with both cities at 2 C (36 F) degrees — summer came early to Norway.

That’s because Sunndalsora, a small village located in the western part of Norway, is experiencing temperatures of 19 C (66 F)!

The heat, recorded on January 2nd, made it Norway’s warmest day in January since records began.

In fact, it was so warm that the regional mayor, Yvonne Wold, took a dip in the nearby sea. She even stated that, “It’s a new record for warm weather here … People [have been] out in the streets in their T-shirts today.”

She continued, “A lot of people are usually skiing at this time. Not exactly much of that today.”

The previous record was a balmy 17.4 C. Although many locals were happy about experiencing summer in January, it was also a staunch reminder of the effects of climate change.
