One Of China’s Biggest Tech Companies Acquires Swedish Gaming Company Sharkmob

0

It was recently been announced in a press release that one of China’s biggest tech and holding companies, Tencent, has acquired the Swedish gaming company, Sharkmob, for an undisclosed amount.

This comes in a series of moves made by Tencent in an effort to expand their gaming division, especially on the international market. Tencent Holdings has previously invested in numerous game developing companies, like Supercell and Epic Games.

Steven Ma, senior vice president of Tencent, said in a statement; “Sharkmob’s creative and passionate team has a proven track record of developing triple-A titles which involves open world settings and various gameplays. We look forward to more exciting innovation for game-lovers by combining Sharkmob’s development capabilities with Tencent’s technologies and expertise,

Sharkmob was originally founded two years ago in Malmö, Sweden by Anders Holmquist, Fredrik Rundqvist, Martin Hultberg, Petter Mannerfelt and Rodrigo Cortes.

On their website, they write; “After many years in the AAA segment of the industry the dream was to get back closer to the actual development; work with smaller teams and embrace the creative work that makes game development so much fun!

Apart from working on new projects together with Tencent, the creative gaming company is currently working on an unannounced game, launch date unknown.

We view the future of online gaming the same way and Tencent being a leading internet and games platform gives Sharkmob the reach and resources to be a part of that future. Support from Tencent’s incredible group of game teams will allow us to fully pursue our passion of bringing great gaming experiences to as many players as possible.”, said Fredrik Rundqvist, CEO of Sharkmob, in a statement.

The Swedish Krona Is The Worst-Performing Major Currency So Far In 2019

0

The Swedish krona is at the lowest it’s ever been in over a decade. This is good news for anyone who plans to visit Sweden over the summer. For the Swedes, however, vacation this year’s vacation might come with a hefty price tag.

The Swedish krona dropped 9 percent against the US dollar coming in at 9.65 in last Thursday’s trading. This is the worst number that the currency has held against the US dollar since 2002.

As 2019 turned in, the krona has fallen six percent against the Euro, and currently standing at 10.79. Last time krona was this weak against the Euro was ten years ago, in the summer of 2009.

It is due to these numbers that The Financial Times report that the Swedish krona is the worst-performing major currency so far in 2019.

The unexpected low inflation in Sweden combined with uncertainty over global developments underlines the need to proceed carefully in monetary policy. The Swedish Central Bank is keeping the key repo rate unchanged at –0.25 percent in line with market expectations but predicts a raise again by the end of the year, or beginning of next.

Despite the Swedish Central Banks best attempts to regulate the rate, Chief economist, Michael Grahn, at Danske bank doesn’t seem to think the Swedish currency will be bouncing back any time this year. To Swedish news agency, TT, he said;

“Unfortunately, I think it is going to get even worse.”

Greta Thunberg Graces The Cover Of Time Magazine

0

There are few who have missed the rise of Swedish teenage environmentalist, Greta Thunberg. From sitting outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm, striking for the climate on her own, to inspiring millions of people to consider their own footprint on the planet, Greta has made an enormous impact in such a small amount of time.

READ: The Quotes By Greta Thunberg That Inspired Thousands To School Strike For The Climate

Next step? Gracing the cover of Time Magazine in their Next Generation Leader campaign. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, after inspiring hundreds of thousands of children to stand up to politicians around the globe, asking them to take climate change seriously, for their sake.

“We are children, saying why should we care about our future when no one else is doing that? When children say something like that, I think adults feel very bad,” Greta Thunberg says, according to Time Magazine

A recent UN report claimed that human society was under urgent threat as more and more of the Earth’s natural life goes extinct. Greta’s goal is to convince governments to reduce emissions in par with the Paris agreement hence limiting the rise of global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Greta’s refreshing frankness and sense of urgency has not only brought on fame and admiration from politicians, royals and even the Pope. She has also been the target of bullying and threats from climate-change deniers, some criticizing her serious appearance and monotone voice, which are common characteristics with people on the autism spectrum.

But that doesn’t bother Greta. To Time Magazine she says:

“It’s quite hilarious when the only thing people can do is mock you, or talk about your appearance or personality, as it means they have no argument, or nothing else to say,”

“I’m not going to let that stop me, because I know this is so much more important.”

McDonald’s Commercial Has Americans Thinking Twice

0

In a commercial made by the franchise giant McDonald’s Sweden, they not only highlight the fact that Swedish dads have the freedom to, and actively chooses to, take paternity leave.

They also make a unique pitch to potential hamburger consumers — come to McDonald’s because our customers aren’t rude to children. The ad shows a father of two bringing his children with him on different kinds of occasions, such as a wedding, the doctors’ lounge, the grocery store and so on. Everywhere they go people either leave or get upset because as we all know, children can be fussy. However, upon entering McDonald’s, the father is greeted by understanding smiles from other families.

Even though the commercial is made for Sweden specifically, it made headlines across the world, with the American site, Fatherly, writing: “interesting”, and how “this illustrates in many ways how parenthood in Sweden is different”.

Very true. It is in fact, quite different. Sweden offers up 480 days of paid parental leave (60 of these days can only be used by the father), with over 90 percent of all fathers making use of this. In the U.S., paid paternity is not regulated by a law, which means some get up to a few weeks and some none at all.

With their commercial, McDonald’s wants to show how family friendly they are in hopes of more families visiting the franchise. To the rest of the world, the commercial raised important questions regarding the differences between a father’s relationship in Sweden versus countries where fathers aren’t able to take time off to spend with their children.

You can read this article published by Fatherly, a lifestyle magazine for Dads, expressing surprise over the fact that there are changing tables in the men’s bathroom, as well, in Sweden.

This article was originally published on May 4, 2018.

Norwegian Airlines Cancel Majority Of Their Flights To The States This Fall

0

Ten out of 13 direct flights between the States and Scandinavia will discontinue this fall. According to Expressen and the travel site insideflyer.dk, the only remaining direct flights this fall will be the Stockholm to New York, Oslo to New York and Oslo to Miami routes.

The news was revealed after the site had tried booking trips with the airline, only to find out that almost none of the routes were available later this year.

According to several sources, Norwegian’s only option to survive its economic crisis is to drastically cut down its winter programming.

Will flights from Copenhagen stay on the ground?

Although not officially confirmed yet, drastic cuts are to be expected if the airline wants to see another spring. This means currently existing flights from Stockholm to San Francisco and Los Angeles will be discontinued. The only direct flight from Sweden will be to New York.

The future looks even less bright for Copenhagen, where all five routes will be axed: Orlando, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York.

Oslo keeps its routes to New York and Miami but loses Orlando, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

According to Norwegian’s head of communications, Charlotte Holmbergh Jacobsson, the winter schedule is simply not set yet, thus the lack of tickets available:

-The program is still under review and will be ready in a few weeks. Some changes will occur, but we’re still discussing which ones.

SAS Pilot Strike Comes To An End – And Now Tickets Might Be Cheaper

0

Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, har just announced that the week-long pilot strike has come to an end.

It was last week that Swedes in the States published an article about the negotiations between SAS and the pilot’s representatives at the Swedish National Mediation Office had collapsed.

What followed was uncertainty among Scandinavian travelers, and chaos, as SAS was forced to cancel thousands of flights. Now SAS has announced that their planes will be back in business starting Friday.

In an email to customers, SAS writes:

“We truly apologize if you are one of those affected by the pilot strike, and because of it couldn’t travel as planned,”

“SAS has reached an agreement with the Pilots Association in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and will now go back to the normal. We are doing everything we can for you and our passengers to be able to fly out as soon as possible. We are however expecting some interruptions in the air traffic the next coming days,”

But the good news doesn’t just stop there. According to air analysts, SAS might want to make amends with their clients by offering lower prices on tickets for the next coming couple of days.

“What SAS is probably going to do when the strike is over is try to appease the market by offering cheaper tickets and better deals for Eurobonus-clients,” says the air analyst Hans Jörgen Elnæs, Winair to the Norwegian news site E24.

#Swedishmade: Minecraft

1

#Swedishmade is our article series in which we feature famous brands, apps, artists, DJs and companies that are made in Sweden. We’re skipping H&M, IKEA, and ABBA because we know that you already know they’re Swedish treasures – instead we are highlighting equally as awesome people, brands and companies, that we are guessing you didn’t know were Swedish. Are we right or are we wrong? Don’t forget to vote in the poll below the article!

For our second #Swedishmade article, we want to introduce the video/computer game turned empire Minecraft.

Minecraft was created by Markus “Notch” Persson, with assistance from Carl Manneh and Jakob Porsner, in which he also founded the video-game company Mojang with.

The sandbox video game began as the brainchild of Markus Persson. He started creating the game as a project while working as a developer for Jalbum (today called King, the company behind Candy Crush). In June 2010, when the beta version of the game was selling more than 400 copies a day, Marcus decided to quit his job and focus fully on Minecraft. With the profits he had gotten from selling the Minecraft copies, he started the video game company Mojang, still headquartered in Stockholm.

It was on November 18th, 2011, that Minecraft was officially published and released to the world. It would come to be the best-selling video game ever, partly sharing a number one spot with different versions of Tetris. Before the official release, Minecraft had sold millions of copies of the game in its beta stage.

The, what seemed to almost be an overnight success, up-and-comer Mojang was now challenging the whole gaming industry.

From the time it was released in 2011, Minecraft had in a short time received multiple awards and had critics praising the game to the skies. According to The Daily Record “the game was something special”, urging their readers to buy the game. Other critics loved the square graphics saying that it made the game “instantly memorable”. In November 2011, right after the official release of the game, a Minecraft convention called MineCon was organized. It was held in Las Vegas, and the tickets were sold out after just two hours.

With complex systems, Minecraft allowed players the creative freedom to open up worlds and create opportunities previously only existing in their minds. Minecraft is also thought to be the portal in which many young minds entered the digital world. Who knows how many creative coders and digital geniuses Markus has inspired through his creation?

But the triumph of Minecraft went from being a fun ride for founder Marcus to becoming a burden trying to keep up the success and expanding in a way that kept the millions of fans happy.

In 2014, after particularly harsh words directed at Notch from fans online, he tweeted “Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life?” Microsoft picked up on the opportunity, and just a few weeks later Microsoft announced its interest in buying Mojang for a whopping $2.5 billion, effectively fulfilling Marcus wishes to be freed from his duties at Mojang.

Fans of Minecraft feared that the big corporate giant that had come to acquire Mojang would change the product and make it irrecognisable to the fans. Fortunately, Microsoft loved the product way too much to want to change it, and the game remained true to itself while expanding and making itself even more available to people around the world.

Today Minecraft has been released in different versions, catering to the need of different groups of players and fans. They have also partnered with Netflix to create a Minecraft world based on the Netflix original series “Stranger Things”.According to this timeline, the Chinese beta version for the Chinese market was released in August earlier this year, making the world dominance of Minecraft a fact.

Did you know:

  1. Mojang is a simplified version of the Swedish word “Mojäng” meaning “gadget”
  2. Founder Markus “Notch” Persson is the owner of the most expensive house in Beverly Hills, even outbidding Jay-Z and Beyonce in the bidding war for it.
  3. Minecraft won the award for the Most Addicting Game at the 2015 Kids Choice Award
  4. According to a study, one-third of Minecraft users discovered the game through Youtube videos
  5. The very first version of Minecraft was created by Markus in just a few days
  6. The Danish government recreated the entire nation of Denmark on Minecraft
  7. It’s the most played XBOX Live game
  8. There’s a world within Minecraft where the almost extinct Swedish dialect “Älvdalskan” is spoken.

Let us know below whether or not you knew that Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all times, was #Swedishmade in the poll below!

SAS Pilots Move Forward With Strike As Negotiations Collapse: This Is What You Need To Know

0

Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, is in a bit of a pickle.

The deadline for the negotiations between SAS and the pilot’s representatives at the Swedish National Mediation Office was set till today at midnight, Swedish time. The negotiations did, however, prove to be unsuccessful, and the strike is in full motion.

A few minutes after midnight, the negotiations were discontinued. The strike in Sweden is underway. I have just got in my car to go back home and sleep. Our assessment is that the two counterparts stand too far away from each other. Things have to change for these negotiations to have an impact,” said

The strike, involving 1500 pilots has therefore officially begun, with SAS canceling over 200 flights originally scheduled to depart Friday. SAS says on their website that they will offer anyone who has a departing flight between 26-29 April the choice to reschedule their flight without any cost. None of SAS partner airlines will be affected by the strike.

SAS Pilot Group, which represents 95% of all SAS-pilots across all Scandinavian countries have demanded higher salaries and better working conditions. While the negotiations in Stockholm have come to an unfortunate end, the negotiations in Norway and Denmark are at this time still continuing.

According to SAS, around 70% of the company’s flights are affected during a strike. The rest of the flights are carried out by partner airlines. This means that about 70.000 travelers are affected by Fridays canceled flights. Another estimated 100.000 will be affected by the weekends canceled flights.

You can find more specific information about individual flights here. Some are still operating without being affected by the strike.

The information below is taken directly from SAS website:

SAS IS OFFERING VOLUNTARY REBOOKING FREE OF CHARGE, for those passengers who are being worried about their travel arrangements being affected by a possible pilot strike starting on 26APRIL19.

The offer is valid for SAS operated flights. Flights operated by our partners are not affected by a possible strike and are not subject for voluntary rebooking free of charge.

We are offering our customers to voluntary change their reservation free of charge on My Bookings, even if the flight hasn’t yet been affected or canceled as long as the following criteria are met:

·        Your flight is with SAS

·        Flight is not cancelled

IS YOUR FLIGHT CANCELED?
You have 3 options, regardless of ticket type:

1.     WAIT FOR OUR REBOOKING TO THE NEXT AVAILABLE FLIGHT

If your flight is canceled, the rebooking process is started immediately. Once you’ve been rebooked, we’ll send you an SMS. If you booked your ticket via a travel agent, you can contact them directly to find out about your rebooking options.

2.     REBOOK TO A FLIGHT ON A LATER DATE

For all reservations made via SAS, please visit flysas.com – Traffic disruptions, to find contact information.

If you booked your ticket via a travel agent, you can contact them directly to find out about your rebooking options. If you fly charter with an SAS flight, i.e. flight numbers SK7000 – SK7999, please contact your tour operator. You’ll find the contact details in your travel documents.

3.     CANCEL YOUR TICKET AND GET A REFUND

If your SAS flight has been canceled or delayed by more than 3 hours and you no longer wish to travel, you’re entitled to a full refund of your ticket. If you do this, please note that we won’t be obliged to provide assistance (such as meals and accommodations) once you’ve canceled your ticket.
HOW TO REQUEST A REFUND FOR A CANCELED FLIGHT: If you booked via SAS and your ticket number starts with 117,  you can request a refund. If you prefer, a request for refund can be made later.

If you booked via a travel agent or tour operator, please contact them directly, as we can only reimburse the person/company that made the booking.

A)    If SAS has rebooked you on a flight departing WITHIN 24 HOURS from your original departure:

·        If we’ve offered you a new flight but you choose to book your own transportation, you’re still entitled to a full refund of your unused SAS ticket. In this case, we won’t reimburse you for any alternative transportation.

·        Remember to cancel your ticket with SAS or with your tour operator/travel agent to receive a refund for the unused SAS ticket (see above under 3 “How to request a refund for a canceled flight”).

·        Please note that we are not obliged to cover any expenses for meals or hotel accommodations during the delay once you’ve canceled your ticket with SAS.

B)    If SAS has rebooked you on a flight departing 24 HOURS OR MORE after your original departure:

·        If we’re not able to rebook you on a new flight departing within 24 hours of your original departure, you may book another airline ticket, take a train, bus or rent a car. We will reimburse the difference between your unused SAS ticket and the cost of your new transportation under comparable transport conditions upon production of receipts. If you choose to book alternative travel, please remember to cancel your ticket with SAS to get a refund for your unused ticket.

·        Please note that the cost for the alternative transportation must be in the same price range as your original ticket. If you choose to buy a new airline ticket, we will only reimburse you for a trip in the same service class as in your original SAS ticket.
