Swedes Are Now Recycling More Than Ever

0

Today, about 8 out of 10 bottles and cans that are sold in Sweden go on to be recycled in stores. But even if the whole world recycled like the Swedes do, we would still need 4,2 planets to make up for the waste.

Good news is that even though the number of sales of bottles and cans has increased recycling stays at a steady 80%, a 10% difference from the country’s 90% goal.

Sara Barthelson Riismark, Communication Manager at Returpack (Sweden’s Recycle Agency), says that people have different reasons for wanting to recycle, but almost all Swedes are positive towards the recycling system.

Many thinks it’s important because of the environment, that it combats littering and that recycling stations make sure that the waste is taken care off properly. Young men are the ones that tend to care about getting their money back.

In Sweden, all regular grocery stores have recycling machines, and almost all bottles and cans can be recycled for about 10-20 cents per item. More than 9 out of 10 large bottles are recycled, but seen to smaller bottles and cans, the results aren’t as great. It’s often the smaller bottles, that people buy “on the go” that are thrown away in general garbage cans or on the ground instead of being recycled.

Last year, 1,85 million bottles and aluminum cans were recycled, which is around 183 bottles or cans, per person.

Swedish Serial Entrepreneur and Blogger Isabella Löwengrip Launches Her Beauty Brand on Amazon

0

The Swedish serial entrepreneur and blogger, Isabella Löwengrip, has more or less taken Sweden by storm since inviting us all in to follow her life through her insecure teenage years with acne problems and heartaches to becoming a serial entrepreneur, the most powerful businesswoman in Sweden 2018 and, most importantly, a mother to two young toddlers, all before turning 30 years young.

Earlier this week, Isabella revealed on her Instagram that her beauty brand Löwengrip now would be available for sale in the U.S. through Amazon.

Löwengrips products have been widely popular in Sweden and have, according to their social media accounts, become the fastest growing beauty brand in Sweden. Luckily for us living in the States, they have made their products available for purchase in the U.S. through Amazon.

Unfortunately, some of our very favorites, like the deodorant and the heat protector, are yet to reach the Amazon store but you can always get it from their own online store.

Luminous Bronze Self-Tan Drops

I would consider myself pretty tan already but because of high SPF, constant acne treatments and facials, my face feels ghost pale in comparison to my body. My face has become extremely acne prone since I moved to LA, so this is basically the only self-tan product I dare to use on my face. Not too heavy or oily. Highly recommend for other SPF and facial lovers like me.

Good To Go Dry Shampoo

One of my absolute favorites from the Löwengrip brand. There’s always a can of either this one or Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo in my bag to keep my hair fresh in the not so fresh, humid L.A. air. Löwengrip’s dry shampoo definitely being at a more affordable price point.

Blonde Perfection Silver Shampoo

I’m one of those rare, non-blonde Swedes, so I don’t use silver shampoo but the rest of the team at Swedes in the States are gorgeous blondies and those who use Löwengrip’s Silver Shampoo, swear by it. I mean, Isabella’s gorgeous locks are clear proof that this product keeps the brass at bay.

This How Much The Most Northern Winery In The World Was Just Sold For

0

It’s not often that a winery goes up for sale in Norway, but this past month, that’s exactly what happened. And not just any winery: Lerkåsa Vineyards, the reportedly most northern vineyard in the world, was just sold to a new owner.

Located in Telemark, about 150 km from Norway’s capital, Oslo, the vineyard was created by Joar Sættem and his wife, Wenche Hvattum back in 2008. What started as a small project (they only planted 400 vines in the first year!) turned into a quest to see which varieties could withstand the cold Norwegian winters.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BDVixJAHMCa/

“We have experimented with different grape varieties that can withstand a little cold. Some have frozen to death, but we have found two usable varieties,” noted Joar.

Out of 20 possible varieties, only three were successful: One variety Hasanski Sladki, came from Russia, the other, Solaris, was developed in Germany, and a third, Rondo from France.

Although most people think of wineries that are in warm, Mediterranean climates such as Napa Valley or Italy, Norway has its own secret. Gvarv, the city where Lerkåsa Vineyards is located, has a unique microclimate which makes it one of the warmest places in Norway. Besides wine, the couple also grows a few varieties of fruit and rent out their estate as a bed and breakfast.

The vineyard was listed for sale for 6,750,000 NOK (about $830,000 USD), but the final selling price was not mentioned. This price includes 15 acres of fertile vineyards, a national cuisine restaurant, several cottages, and three gigantic wine barrels that serve as overnight accommodation!

“This vineyard project was a dream come true,” said Hvattum, 62. “But both of us are aging and we no longer can do this by ourselves. Unfortunately, none of our six children are interested as they all have urban jobs.”

“We hope there are more crazy people like us out there, to move the boundaries,” Saettem said.

So, you might be wondering, who are the new owners?

Lill and Odd Wollberg, from Årnes, about 60 km from Oslo, are the new owners of Lerkåsa Vineyards. They will move up to Gvar in the fall to work on the winery full-time, but for now, they’re practicing and training for the new harvest – check out the photos above.

Congratulations to Lill and Odd, and cheers to your new vineyard! We can’t wait to see (and try) 2019’s wines!

Swedish Soccer Player Scores A Goal, Celebrates By Downing Beer Thrown To Him By Fans

0

Swedish player Kennedy Bakircioglu made headlines yesterday when he, after scoring on a free kick, caught a beer thrown onto the field by a fan and downed it happily. That’s what we call a True Viking Spirit!

The 37-year-old is on his final season with Hammarby IF where he’s also the club’s captain. The man himself called the whole thing crazy and said that “in the middle of celebrating, someone throws down a beer and I catch it. It’s insane. It felt like everything just clicked. So I just finished what was left of it. It was mostly for fun, but it was also very nice.”

Kennedy also said that “the end is near, and this is just what I needed. I needed my medicine.” What a perfect way to celebrate a long and successful career!

Thousands of Swedes Stranded Abroad as Airline Goes Bankrupt

1

It’s a scene straight out of every traveler’s nightmare: You show up to the airport, sunkissed and relaxed after a fabulous vacation, only to be told that your ticket is invalid because the airline just went bankrupt. Today, that nightmare turned into reality for thousands of travelers as Primera Air, a Scandinavian-base airline, folded up and went bankrupt.

Founded in 2009, Primera Air was Icelandic-owned but had operations in both Latvia and Denmark. They mainly catered to Scandinavian passengers and had over 40 destinations in the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North America. Primera Air flew from Gothenburg, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, and had around 300,000 passengers from such countries.

Although Primera Air had been in business for over 15 years, it struggled during the last two thanks to delivery delays of new aircraft (the majority of their current fleet was 20-something years old), canceled flights, and low margins. Ironically, the company was still selling tickets up until 5 PM European Time and grounded all of their current flights at midnight. Those who were already checked in or boarded had several hours of delay as crews quickly scrambled to figure out what to do. For example, travelers booked on PF41 from London to New York were not allowed on the plane.

It gets worse: the airline was not part of the CAA’s ATOL Protection scheme, and passengers will need to make their own arrangements to return home. Since the airline went bankrupt, passengers will not be reimbursed and their tickets are completely useless. However, travelers who took out travel insurance or used a credit card to book their ticket might get lucky and have some money sent back to them. Swedish charter company Solresor who used Primera for their trips says that their main focus right now is to help their clients get back home.

Leif Pagrotsky Steps Down As Consul General in New York

0

Leif Pagrotsky was the first Consul General in New York after the Consulates controversial shut down in 2009. Yesterday was his last day on the job, and the 66-year-old whom has dedicated his entire life to politics announces that he is now ready to retire from politics all in all.
His ordination has come to an end, this is not a lifetime position. Normally it’s around 2-3 years,” said Per Karlsson, press communicator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to Expressen.

Pagrotsky has been politically active his whole life and is one of the Social Democrats most decorated politicians, with a long resume as Minister of Commerce, Minister of Enterprise and Innovation as well as Minister of Culture. He also holds the title as the 10th sexiest politician in Sweden.

Leif Pagrotsky will be replaced by Annika Rembe.

Rembe is currently the Director General of the Swedish Institute and has previously worked as the General Commissary and CEO of Sweden’s participation in Expo 2010.

We thank Leif Pagrotsky for the fantastic things he’s done during his time as Consul General, and we wish him all the best moving forward.

Welcome to the States, Annika Rembe!

Distracted Boyfriend Meme Ruled Sexist in Sweden

0

Companies have been using memes in their advertising campaigns for a while, but this week, one Swedish company might have taken things too far.

Bahnhof, an internet service provider, broke its own rules against gender discrimination by (mis)using the popular Distracted Boyfriend meme, where a man is turned around and leering a passing woman as his girlfriend stares in disbelief.

The ad was originally to highlight new job openings at Bahnhof. The man (labeled “You”) is looking at the woman in red (“Bahnhof”), while his girlfriend (“Your Current Job”) is in disbelief.

After receiving 15 complaints from different individuals, the Swedish advertising watchdog agency Reklamombudsmannen took action and investigated the advertisement further.

After deliberation, the agency ruled it sexist, stating that using a woman depicted as a sex object, to represent job vacancies was discriminatory. It also mentioned the posts perpetuate a stereotype that women are interchangeable, like workplaces.

However, not everybody agrees on the ruling. Bahnhof’s own CEO, Jon Karlung, maintained that the decision was an overreaction. He pointed out that the meme had been created with no sexist intent by the head of the company’s communications division, who happens to be a woman. “People will be annoyed by anything,” Mr. Karlung added.

It seems Mr. Karlung is right. There were more than a thousand comments under the original post (which you can see here), with the majority being angry at Bahnhof’s advertisement. A few people have even made memes of their own, like the one above.

Ironically, Mr. Karlung also mentioned that “This ad now has probably been the most published Swedish job ad ever. That was not our plan, and now we have got a lot of attention.”

This is Where You Will Find The Worlds Most Disgusting Foods

0

Is your office lunch getting too boring? Perhaps you want to spice up your life (and ostracize yourself from your officemates)?

Look no further: Inspiration awaits at the Disgusting Food Museum!

For a limited time, locals and travelers will have the chance to see and learn about more than 80 of the smelliest, grossest, and most disgusting foods in the world.

Samuel West

The mastermind behind the Disgusting Food Museum is someone who you might have already been familiar with: Dr. Samuel West, who created the insanely popular Museum of Failure. After the success of his first museum, people kept writing ideas to Dr. West for new concepts, which is where he got his lightbulb moment:

“I started getting all these lists of the weirdest museums in the world,” he said. “And I thought that the only museum that I wanted to visit was the Museum of Disgusting Food.”

Dr. West, along with his team, spent more than a year researching the world’s most disgusting foods until they finally narrowed it down to about 80 dishes. One of the toughest things during this time was to figure out how to contain the smell of some of the more pungent products. The worst culprit? Surströmming, also known as fermented herring, almost got the team kicked out of the office thanks to its disgusting smell.

“We tested it, and tested it and were almost kicked out of our current office space because of the smell,” Dr. West said. “I think we’ve got it solved, but I’m not sure. It’s one of those things that keeps me awake at night.”

Curious about which foods made the cut? Check out the list below:

  • Surstömming – fermented herring from Sweden
  • Cuy – roasted guinea pig from Peru
  • Casu marzu – maggot-infested cheese from Sardinia
  • Stinky tofu – pungent bean curd from China
  • Hákarl – well-aged shark from Iceland
  • Durian – The (in)famous pungent fruit from Thailand
This museum proves that you don’t have to travel the world in order to become a foodie – just get yourself to Malmo! You’ll be able to smell, touch, and even taste some of the foods mentioned above.

The Disgusting Food Museum, set in the city of Malmo, Sweden, will run from October 29 to January 27, with tickets costing 185 SKR. For more information, check out the museum’s website here.

Sweden in Bid to Host World Cup in Men’s Ice Hockey

0

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association will be bidding for the opportunity to host the World Cup in Men’s Hockey 2025. This comes almost 13 years after Sweden hosted a World Cup, that ended in a financial fiasco for the association, but a win for the Swedish national team, Tre Kronor.

The association will be submitting their application, today, while on a conference in Malta. Together with Russia and the Czech Republic, Sweden has agreed on a 3-year plan where they will all take turns to host the World Cup. Russia opting for 2023, the Czech Republic for 2024 and Sweden for 2025.

“I truly hope that this will sit well with the international hockey family. Especially when we’ve had such success in negotiating this mutual 3-year plan with the Russians and the Czechs,” said Anders Larsson, the president of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association to Radiosporten.

2022: Finland.

While the application is filed today, it might not take until next year at the World Cup in Slovakia, for us to hear word on the final decision. The World Cup in 2020 will be held in Switzerland, 2021 in Latvia and Belarus, and 2022 in Finland.
