Sweden’s generous immigration policy appears to have given the country the world’s best reputation

1

Sweden usually ranks high in indexes measuring good governance, democracy, and freedom of the press (see for instance Transparency International or Freedom House), and have through turbulence still retained its top placements.

Gothenburg

According to Reputation Institute’s annual ranking of countries, CountryRepTrack, Sweden climbed from third place in 2017 to first place in 2018, just ahead of Finland, which claimed the runner-up position. Third place was awarded to Switzerland, with Norway coming forth. The CountryRepTrack is based on fifty-eight thousand respondents from the G8 countries. The respondents were asked to rank the fifty-five richest countries (by GDP) and were asked questions on their perceptions of business climates, governance, climate policies and the countries’ international appeal.

Two world leading economies made the top ten; Canada as number seven followed by Japan as number eight. However, being a big fish seems not to be enough. According to Forbes, Sweden ranks high because of its work on climate change, progressive social and economic policy, liberal attitude to the HBTQ+ community, gender equality and generous immigration policy.

The United States ranks as the thirty-fourth most reputable country and is credited with excellent technological advancement and branding of companies. However, the United States is perceived to suffer from inefficient governance, and from being an unsafe country with low ”ethics” according to Reputation Institute, which also states that intangibles, i.e., reputation and perception of ethics and culture are becoming more important than conventional factors such as GDP.

Sweden is no doubt a ”goodie two shoes”. Ninety-nine percent of the country’s waste is recycled, fifty-two percent of the energy production comes from renewable sources and according to Forbes, Sweden has almost become synonymous with tolerance and hospitality.

The fact that Sweden has admitted the most refugees per capita is one of the components that have contributed most to our good reputation,” says Henrik Selin at the Swedish Institute to Svenska Dagbladet. Sweden is perceived as the world’s most ethical country, free from corruption and with progressive policies. We are not only perceived as virtuous but also as an altruistic country with the will to contribute to the betterment of the world” he continues. He also says that these rankings are of great importance to Sweden and other high ranking small economies, since they contribute to attracting international capital and investment, sparking political cooperation and appealing to tourists. ”That Sweden is the most reputable country is something to be proud of,” Selin says.

The Prime Minister Stefan Löven said in a statement ”I am convinced that this result stems from the fact that our social model creates not only growth but also freedom, equality, and security /…/ More and more people understand that inequality is a major obstacle to economic development in the world.

Would you Stay in a Swedish Cabin for 72 Hours?

0

Imagine this: You feel like you have one of the most stressful jobs in the world, your blood pressure is through the roof, and you’ve had enough – isn’t it time for a break?
For 5 people around the world, that’s exactly what happened.

Introducing: the 72 Hour Cabin Project.

This project, developed by the Swedish Tourism Board, took place on Henriksholm Island, a private island in the middle of Lake Ånimmen in western Sweden. The participants could do anything while on the island, including kayaking, swimming, fishing, or just reading in their individual cabins. They stored their items in the huge 18-room house in the middle of the island (where they would also shower). The goal of the project was to see if being out in nature would improve the participants’ lives.

Here are the five participants that were selected for the 72 Hour Cabin Project:

  • Marilyne Didier – taxi driver from Paris
  • Chris Leadbeater –  journalist from London
  • Steffi Tauscher –  police officer from Munich
  • Ben Fogle –  broadcaster from London
  • Baqer Keshwani –  event coordinator from New York

So, how did our group do?

The short answer: fantastic. One of the biggest results from this project was that the participants’ stress levels dropped as much as 70 percent. Their blood pressure and anxiety dropped considerably, and everyone felt closer to nature.

If you’re looking for a sign, this is it – you don’t need to reserve yourself in a cabin for 72 hours, but perhaps take a nice stroll in nature during your lunch break or hike at a new park. Even a few minutes of being out in nature will boost your happiness, decrease stress, and refresh your mind!

TinTin the Danish Squirrel: Instagram’s Cutest Celebrity

0

You might have a few celebrities that you follow on Instagram – Zara Larsson, Rihanna, David Beckham – but there’s one more that you should add to your list:

TinTin the Squirrel!

This little cutie lives in Denmark with his owner, Decan Andersen, and furry sibling (a cat named Tiger). However, his story wasn’t always a happy one…

A few years ago, TinTin was a wild baby squirrel that accidentally fell from a tree and onto a roof. He suffered from a terrible cut and his mother abandoned him shortly after. The Dane, Decan Andersen, saw this and felt so bad for TinTin that he took him to the nearest veterinarian – and it’s a good thing he did because this little squirrel wouldn’t have survived without his help!

In the beginning, TinTin had to wear a “t-shirt” that Mr. Andersen cut from some socks so that he wouldn’t scratch the cut. He had to be bottle-fed every few hours until he could heal properly, but after 5 months, TinTin was back to being a normal squirrel.

You might be wondering, what is it like to live as TinTin? That’s a great question, and you can see it all on this celebrity squirrel’s Instagram account (he has more than 100k followers!). TinTin wakes up around 6 am to eat, and a while later he runs around, plays in the house, and takes a short nap. He normally nibbles on pinecones, but will also eat rabbit food, corn, lettuce, tomatoes and other veggies. TinTin and his owner like to take daily walks in the forest near their house, and TinTin wears a little harness so he doesn’t get lost.

If you want to keep up with this cute Danish squirrel, TinTin has an Instagram, Youtube channel, and Facebook, where his owner chronicles his daily adventures.

Swedish Soccer fans parties so hard that Nizhny Novgorod runs out of beer

0

Around 7,000 Sweden fans were in Nizhny Novgorod to celebrate the country’s first World Cup win in 12 years on after the game against South Korea, which ended 1-0 after Sweden’s captain Andreas Granqvist scored on a penalty shot. Swedish fans celebrated in true Viking spirit — by drinking enough beer that the Russian city ran out. “Strenght,” wrote Mikael Lustig, one of the Swedish players, on Instagram after the victory.
The +7,000 Swedish supporters were apparently so “all in” that most of the beer in the city centered were sold out before the ball hit the grass, according to The Local.

“Yes, some places had already run out yesterday already. The city has never had to arrange something on this scale before, so they’ve been completely taken by surprise,” the Swedish Football Association’s head of security Martin Fredman told Sportbladet.

Sebastian Persson, one of the Swedish supporters, confirmed that everyone was in high spirits after the game. “It was chaos.”

We live in a global world where our customers and co-workers are everywhere. Running effective meetings both in person and virtually is a key skill set to communicate with customers and manage teams and groups.

Still, most of us have endured poorly organized and run meetings in which the communication goes in circles, and nothing is accomplished. Virtual meetings make it even more difficult where you have to deal with time-zone differences, frequent technical issues, attention spans, and communication issues due to the missing face-to-face component.

Good meetings don’t just happen. More preparation goes into “seamless” meetings than we often realize. This workshop will cover several tools and techniques to effectively plan, structure, and deliver engaging and interactive meetings in person and virtually.

We will discuss common meeting issues and problems together with other participants and discover ways how to best mitigate these challenges.

The participants will work in groups and will have a great opportunity throughout the session to expand their business network and learn about other participants businesses and areas of interests. Beverages and coffee will be provided during the session.

During the session participants will learn how to:

  • Effectively plan, prepare and execute business meetings, both in-person and virtual
  • Utilize common meeting techniques & language in their daily work
  • Use effective facilitation techniques to foster discussion, drive inclusion and resolve conflicts
  • Apply practical meeting management tools and recommended practices

Agenda:

  • Common meeting mistakes and how to avoid them
  • Business Meeting Fundamentals – proven practices for all meetings
  • How to drive discussion and get everybody involved
  • How to resolve conflicts during team meetings
  • Virtual Meetings – what do we have to do differently?
  • Application, practice, and feedback

Snacks, beverages, and coffee will be provided during the session.
