Crown Prince Haakon Visits Minnesota to Celebrate 200 Years of Norwegian Emigration to the United States

Two hundred years ago, a brave band of Norwegians crossed the Atlantic in search of greener pastures – and lo and behold, they kick-started a cultural connection that still warms our hearts today, like a good bowl of lutefisk. This week, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway made his way to Minnesota, the epicenter of all things Norwegian-American, to pay tribute to that journey and revel in the bonds that still tie Norway to the United States.

A Historic Milestone in the Heart of the Midwest

Crown Prince Haakon’s visit isn’t just a royal jaunt; it marks the 200th anniversary of organized Norwegian emigration to the States. It all kicked off back in 1825 when the sloop Restauration sailed from Stavanger straight to the bustling streets of New York. From there, a wave of Norwegians hit the road westward, with many setting up shop in Minnesota, which now proudly boasts one of the largest Norwegian-American populations this side of Oslo.

During his visit, the Crown Prince engaged with local dignitaries and community members in Minneapolis and St. Paul, participating in various cultural and business events that celebrated the enduring connection between Norway and the United States.

 

A Celebration of Shared Values

At Norway House in Minneapolis, His Royal Highness cut the ribbon on the new Saga Center. This cultural and business hub aims to spark more collaboration between Norway and the United States. In his speech, he reminded everyone that our shared values –  democracy, innovation, and good old-fashioned community spirit – are what keep the Norwegian-American ties strong and thriving.

“We’re linked by history, but also by our shared belief in progress, sustainability, and solidarity,” Crown Prince Haakon said during the grand opening.

 

Strengthening Transatlantic Ties

Beyond the festivities, the Crown Prince also rolled up his sleeves for a U.S.–Norway Business Summit, co-hosted by the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and the Swedish American Chambers of Commerce (because, why wouldn’t we throw in a Swede or two?). The main focus is on renewable energy, shipping innovation, and building bridges (symbolic ones) across the Atlantic.

Minnesota’s Governor and local university leaders rolled out the red carpet, highlighting partnerships between Norwegian companies and American research institutions working on renewable energy, technology, and sustainable agriculture. Gotta love that Midwestern pragmatism!

A Cultural Homecoming

For many folks in Minnesota’s Norwegian-American community, the royal visit felt like a grand homecoming. Streets and cultural centers decked out in Norwegian flags, local choirs belting out traditional tunes — it was like the annual Christmas party, but with a real-life prince!

“It’s not every day you see a prince in Minneapolis,” laughed one attendee. “But for us, it’s more than just a royal sighting — it’s about honoring our roots and moving forward together.”

Looking Forward

Crown Prince Haakon didn’t stop in just Minnesota; he also made a pit stop in Iowa and Washington, D.C., where he rubbed elbows with members of the Norwegian diaspora and American policymakers to chat about tackling global issues like climate change and defense.

His visit is a beautiful reminder of the enduring friendship between Norway and the United States. This partnership has blossomed from a simple voyage of immigration to a dynamic force in modern diplomacy, innovation, and, of course, a shared love of good food and community.
